Sumo program announcements (pics and vids)

There was a program on Ichinojo focusing on his preparation between the last two tournaments and his performance on the last one on BS NHK1 last night. The two major takeaways from me apart from the fact the he was so stressed out at the beginning of the tournament that he had some kind of spots on his back and muscle issue hindering him from doing proper keiko were the following: 1) In a session with Hakuho he was thought by the yokozuna the importance of always watching his opponent - the young Mongolian seems to go by his instincts without adapting his strategy during the bout. 2) after reviewing his bout with Hakuho, his second loss against him, he understood that against the more skillful opponents you cannot just hug them for a uwatanage - he needs to keep his hands closer to his body and open his mawashi for a counter-throw and secondly he needs to deversify his attacks by trying to attack the front of the mawashi - basically the way Hakuho defeated him. So, the program and Ichinojo claimed, that based on this experience he readjusted his strategy against Tochinoshin and achieved his first win against the Georgian.

Minato-oyakata came across as very out-of-touch with reality person. He scolded and degenerated, in a typical old-fashion Japanese way, Ichinojo for his loss against Goeido and told him that he is no good, when he knew that the Mongolian dealt the stress and lack of training with proper opponents prior to the Kyusho basho.

Kitanofuji put a great burden on him by saying that he should be a yokozuna within two years.

His family was shown. He looks a lot like his mother.

I think Ichinojo looks like and behaves a lot like a kid - he needs proper guidance and treatment of his stress induced psychological issues.

I tried to watch it, but all the mood music was getting on my nerves. I recorded it, so maybe I'll take another stab tonight.

Wakanosato tells about his 23 years in sumo, live on niconico (free registration required) on Monday the 8th 19:00 JST. After just his talk, memories while watching his torikumi, then questions etc. Don't forget the time-shift reservation if you are not planning to watch it live just once.

It's nice to see guys like Toyonoshima get exposure on TV. The average person in Japan does not know him.

edit: I was surprised to see this video isn't just "a night out with Toyo", it also gives detailed information on how the salary system in sumo works.

I am baffled by this fixation on the money issues. I know for sure, many of the old timers and regulars over here might have more profound knowledge about it, of cases where girls specifically are pushed first into visiting bashos in their best outfits, parties and so on and later forced into relationships by their mothers with rikishis for the supposedly easier lifestyle due to their high earning power at some point of their life.

Then, while I wish Toyonoshima longevity on the dohyo, I cannot understand that fixation on fighting until the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 - what is the relation to the sumo? I cannot forget his involvement in the yaocho scandal as well.

Toyonoshima was implicated in the yaocho scandal? I know he was demoted for illegal baseball gambling, but I don't remember reading/hearing anything about bout fixing.

edit: I am not saying his name didn't come up when everyone was speculating, but I don't doubt there are many sekitori veterans who were somehow caught up in yaocho dealings, whether they were found out or not*.

*or whether they were avid participants in it or not

I cannot understand that fixation on fighting until the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 - what is the relation to the sumo?

Well, just a thought. Yesterday, IOC approved of their new plan for Olympic Games development - Agenda 2020, according to which all host cities are to decide what sports should be added, dropped and etc. at the Games. Currently, there is a limit on 28 sports and 306 competitions inside those 28 sports and according to the new plan the definite number of the sports is to be scrapped but the number of events would be set at 310. There were reports on the Japanese TV stations hoping that this decision would lead to re-inclusion of baseball/softball which would increase the number of the events to 308, if nothing is to be removed, so 2 events left and the squash is thought to have a fair chance with two events - men and women. I have not heard anything or seen anything yet, but what are the chances the Japanese IOC to be willing to highlight the "traditional Japanese sport/culture" at the Olympics given that dohyo-iri was a part of the Nagano Olympics opening ceremony? The games are to be held in July/August - starting July 23rd - so what are the chances the Nagoya basho to be part of the competition? There would be several events not held in Tokyo, opposite to the initial Japanese bid, so not that would be an issue..... There is a talk even that South Korean Winter Olympic in 2018 might need to have some of the events such as bobsleigh outside of S. Korea because of the lack of construction funds and Japan to be the place of where those events were to be held. So, Japan might be providing a favor to the IOC and then having the face to want something back.....President of the Tokyo Gamese Organization Committee is the former Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, an avid sumo fan, often seen in the crowd on the senshuraku.

Pure, wild speculation, on my part - but that is the only chance, in my mind, of sumo ever to be part of the Olympics. Some lobbying and etc.....

The outside NSK guests make it interesting, but that bunch made me lose interest in even the good parts. Without Demon or Mitsuru Yaku, Kitanofuji alone can't make it worthwhile.

The only good thing was the live appearance of Yoshikaze.

This is probably not the best thread to put this, but I can't think of another one (and it's not worth creating a new one): The Kyokai appears to have added a new page to their website tracking upcoming sumo media appearances. I think a lot of the info that will be put on there is also going through their Twitter feed, but it'll be nice to have it listed in a more convenient form.

I propose this thread to put it

I forget some of my own threads if I don't use them for too long. This one suffers from Sports Japan having abandoned ozumo, and me disliking the latest Twitter reform, so I didn't check lately what might be worth to watch on NIJI. With the new NSK page the thread may come alive again.

I was too busy to announce it, very recommendable:

yesterday on TV a special about sumo (girls), the new fans responsible for the recent popularity rise of sumo, full of information about sumo, with many of the old scenes and new of the life of popular (with the girls) rikishi - and of course much boring talk in the studio with the kudaranai host, since it is a variety show.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BTIbI96A8U

not likely available for long - otherwise definitely worth to repost in sumo documentary

NHK Sunday sports, start 9:50 p.m. JST, has a lot of sumo today

The most interesting in the program was Hakuho research: tested in the university lab after 5 years again: his muscle power and reaction speed is still the same at age 30 now, but his sense of balance has improved even more.

On April 26th, the 37th edition of the Sakurazumo event took place in the hometown of the 53rd Yokozuna Kotozakura, Kurayoshi in Tottori prefecture. It is held there every year and members of Sadogatake-beya usually attend. This year the shisho was present, taking with him Kotonoshu and Kotoryusei and the heya's gyoji Shikimori Kinosuke.

The shisho with (I assume) some of the event organisers.

Kotonoshu and Kotoryusei put on a shokkiri performance and then took on some of the kids before the real tournament began (last picture). [7]

The reason I put it in this thread is that footage from the event will be shown on May 6th in a half-hour program on Nihonkai Telecasting, which seems to be a Tottori-only broadcaster, but maybe something will turn up on the web.
