Nagoya Basho 2012 - General Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Chiyotairyu is destroying the lower rankings. I did not know that Masunoyama had a lung condition. How can he do keiko then? How can he train 5 hours a day?

Simple search

I think this forum can use as many original posts and discussions as it can get, Kintamayama, even if they are rehashed occasionally! Thanks for the link ( and the post) , though.

Well geez, it looks like the Kotooshu fear was mostly for nothing as he's doing pretty well. Still a long basho, though...

I don't mind the rehashing. I was just pointing out the excellent forum search engine in general.

All the reports said he would probably get past week one. Week two may prove a problem with the accumulating fatigue.

The trend for the pulling techniques is slightly lower than in the past few basho, I am inclined to say; even Chiotairyu has been moving forward more than before.

Chiyotairyu had been continuously reprimanded by his shisho Kokonoe for henka and slap down techniques and has now succeeded in changing to "beautiful" sumo. Day 4 against Tamawashi had some show of slap down attempts, but the kimari-te was uwate-nage, making it OK. And today he won again, with yorikiri.

Chiyotairyu has been very impressive indeed, hopefully he will continue with forward-moving sumo for the rest of the basho. It seemed to be something he was working on in keiko before the basho, as you can see in this video:

Speaking of guys going on the attack, it was nice to see Jokoryu actually going for some offense on Days 3 and 4. Hopefully he's finally figured out that "stay on defense and wait for your opponent to make a mistake in every single bout" is not really going to cut it in juryo and above...

funny bout on day 6 was tokitenku-shotenro

tokitenku did not go for his usual legdrips and that made me wonder how he would manage to lose, despite having a firm morozashi

the result surprised even me.......did not come up with the possibility of tokitenku just sitting down......

kimarite kotenage was just for fun for the nsk-guys, i guess....

I'd love to see a Harumafuji/Hakuho layoff, though.

Good call. Harumafuji really looks like the most spirited contender for the yusho so far.

ok.. what happened during the kitaharima - asahisho match -- did the gyoji call a rematch? false start?

many bewildered looks and no movement by the judges....

the MIB callled matta - or should I say whispered it during the bout.

they have to make sure to be heard, Asahisho was not amused (and neither was I, cos I picked Asahisho in SekiToto...)

Tochiozan-Kakuryu - inadvertent henka slap-down ? Kakuryu seemed to apologize to Tochiozan after the win.

So all the commotion about scheduling some early ozeki-ozeki matches has resulted in them...starting up even a day later than last basho. Funny stuff.

Seemed well planned at least to my eyes, but now as an Ozeki he "has" to apologize.

As we saw in May, Kakuryu might well be the weakest of the top 7; a loss to Tochiozan, against whom he is (12-10) now, had to be avoided at all costs.

Hakuho is just getting by, while Baruto is solid - Harumafuji almost just as much.

Hakuho seems cautious, somewhat (some minor lesion?). Baruto is my bet

(and Kaisei for a 10 win basho)

Who is next on day 8?

Aminishiki, with a 12-7 record against Kakuryu.Today's henka might be the smokescreen for tomorrow (it's still "tomorrow" where I am).

A bit of forward planning never hurt anyone!

When was the last time a guy got the yusho one basho then lost the first nine straight the next?

Thankyou very much. Kyokutenho is aiming at a worst ever post-Yusho performance at the moment. Every other rikishi on that list had won at least two by day nine. Poor guy

If you've never seen the shimpan group move from the middle of the dohyo during a discussion (I don't think I had), Day 9's Mori-Asanojo bout has you covered...
