Was a little disappointed it doesn’t mention the tachimochi and tsuyuharai. It also seems to say that all divisions are professional. Other than that, good vid though.

Have they made any other short wiki items beyond 1-12? If so, where can these be found?
It would be good to have items about tachimochi and tsuyuharai as ALAKTORN said, but I can think of a lot of other things ... like the shimpan and monoii, torinaoshi, torikumis and rikishi not fighting other rikishi from their own heya, ceremonies like ring entering and bow twirling, things like full house banners, ticket sales, yusho portraits, sansho... etc. etc. etc!!!

Do the toriteki have a side job?

The whole thing is called professional sumo - all that join are professionals. It is simply a bit against our idea of pro-sports that some only get paid pocket money.

Sekitori = Major League.  Toriteki= Minor League.

I’m confused… http://jisho.org/search/toritekilow-ranking unsalaried wrestler (ranked below juryo)”.

@Bumpkin appreciate the attempt at a familiar comparison but I have no idea what that even is about. Baseball?

Yes.  Major League baseball players make millions of dollars a year, plus they have all the benefits and "benefits".  Minor Leaguer's play for very little money.

Think of toriteki as indentured apprentices learning their trade, which is professional sumo. They get training, board and lodging, and maybe a bit of an allowance, and like apprentices everywhere they get to do all the crappy jobs that need doing. Unlike a conventional apprenticeship there's no element of time served, and the vast majority never 'qualify' by getting promoted to sekitori.

They are all on the banzuke though, salaried or not, and everyone on there is in professional sumo.

Nice 'all about' video, just under 40 minutes long; English voice-over. Views and opinions from Takanohana. dates from when he was still fighting. Enjoy.

I'd like to see a full day (not a tiny 5 min clip) in the life of a young rikishi in the lower divisions. From getting up early to singing the older rikishi a lullaby. You always hear about it, but in this video i saw a clock and it very obviously said 7:30 am and the boys were soaked. It's the first time i realized, what i read so many times.

The YouTube Channel konpeito krumbs https://www.youtube.com/user/moosenator2yo where Inhashi found 'chronicles of a sumo wrestler' in English, has some interesting uploads. Pretty grainy quality usually, but not run of the mill content. Here's a selection

For francophones and/or people who just like to watch; the French version of 'A Normal Life: Chronicle of a Sumo Wrestler' that Inhashi posted on October 18. This version is good quality, shorter (55min), but contains some scenes not in the version Inhashi posted. The opening frames with gorgeous Kyukoshuho are there.

Second one is in Japanese (just over 26 min). Akebono (with dubious drawing behind his head - seems to be a squid, or something), Wakanohana, another guest and the hostess discussing careers, rivalries etc. Plenty of clips of great bouts. A lot of Akebono v. Takanohana, including when they were very young.
