Sumo documentary videos

so.. I was reviewing The Chronicles Of A Sumo Wrestler documentary and remembered to search for the kid that they were following... here it is winning against "the" gagamaru https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya_Kk4R9xQU#t=229 interesting :)

Confusing, at the end of video it tells us he quit. Did he go back? Doesn't look like him.

yeah, it's him: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=8899 :)

He came back. Competed in Juryo in the last basho.

Thank you both. Good to see he decided to keep trying.

One thing that bothered me about the video was they didn't show much of any technique training. I assume they just left most of that out or it comes later?

Great film. I'm sure that as Kyokutenho's tsukebito, Kyokutaisei had some support and pep talk from Tenho as he also left (actually ran away) from the heya in his early years fresh from Mongolia. Kyokutenho was encouraged back and perservered. Now he's made history with a yusho and now breaking all kinds of records at 40 years old :o Following Kyokutaisei brings some excitement just because I want to see him succeed. He surely made progress in the direction of Juryo promotion recently. I'm sure he still has his doubts considering the severe training conditions / pressure from his sponsors and supporters/ ect... But the film called "Shinbo" in Japan proves that he did patiently endure. I'm glad for him that he is doing well. What a man..... (Lifting weights...)

Its an interesting documentary for sure....

Ever since watching it for the first time though, I've had a big feeling that there's more than a little scripting involved. Who decided to make a documentary on this particular kid, even before he officially enrolled into sumo so as to have footage from his graduation and his talk with his father? And since I am pretty sure rikishi phonecalls to their family aren't regularly recorded, those late night talks with his sister were probably scripted as well. And finally, what a luck, choosing a kid at random and ending up with one that not eventually made a dramatic (and temporary) exit from his heya, but came back to become a sekitori...

I think its a good insight into some little viewed parts of everyday life as a rikishi, but as far as I am concerned it looks quite a lot like scripted reality tv and less than an actual spontaneous documentary... Doesn't necessarily make it less realistic though, I have to admit.

Keep in mind that not everything that's filmed is also eventually aired. They may well have tracked several newbies before settling on Ogushi and the rest of the material is now on the cutting room floor.

Alot of rikishi leave their heya temporarily and come back, because they feel they can't take it. Some come back for whatever reason, some don't. I don't think it's that rare at all. And the documentary was filmed well before he became a sekitori. Your post seems to imply that is is more than just luck that he became a sekitori. Were they supposed to know this in advance somehow and had a flux capacitor in the DeLorean out back? I am not trying to be dismissive, but I am not sure what else you could mean.

The documentary producers must have asked around and found a kid who had chosen to enter sumo and had made arrangements with a heya. Then the documentary makers started filming; his graduation, the meeting with the oyakata, etc. Is that so unnatural?

I can possibly see a few of your other points, and just like any documentary people are going to talk and act somewhat differently for the camera. But his talks with his sister sounded pretty genuine to me. Of course rikishi phone calls aren't regularly recorded; they asked permission from them for the purpose of the documentary. The talk with his father is the most obvious chance for a bit of scripting, but I assume they asked the father to say whatever it was when he first encouraged his son to join sumo, and maybe he hammed it up his presentation a bit for the camera. Nothing more than that I would think.

oh my -- only a year ago or so, so hardly 'nostalgic'! . The N HK producers sent me a CD of the show but I never watched it, so this was the first time I saw the show (that was an awful seat that scrunched me up). A couple of months later I did a second show that included two location shots, of four places around Ryogoku that I felt made a much more complete picture.

Thanx for the memories....

Very interesting, despite my not being able to understand the Japanese. What a powerhouse this man was,
