(his latest 15-0 record at the Natsu Basho his 25th to date)

This does not read quite as intended, I think.

The Osunaarashi article apparently appeared in Japanese in the printed version of the Asahi Shimbun on June, 1st.

It basically clears all my concerns from the Shinto rituals thread.

Well, like it was mentioned on that thread, all it takes to clear up the issue is someone asking him if he has an issue :-).

Already the best of the ozeki by a country mile Kinenosato has only failed to score less than 10 — the prerequisite of any ozeki each basho — once in the past 12 basho ...

Erm...

Edit: That aside, the comparison of Osunaarashi to Kokkai is an interesting one. Nearly all of us here didn't get to see him as he rose through the lower divisions, but given his fighting style and burly appearance I can imagine he looked similarly impressive.

There are of course others who would see the “other” yokozuna Harumafuji as another threat to Kisenosato. Yet, since his promotion on the back of consecutive 15-0 titles in Nagoya and Tokyo in July and September of 2012, Harumafuji has in large part failed to impress.

January 2013 - 15-0 Yusho impressed me a bit.

I agree. And I think it's silly from Mark to make the sound comparison to Kokkai and Aran and conclude that he is in for a tough basho. Just look at the excellent juryo scores of Kokkai and Aran (40-20 and 22-8).

Over at Language Log they call this "misnegation" and are highly entertained by it. Edited by Kuroyama

selective reading / quoting there Jeremy. ;-)

So let's quote a bit more from Buck Martin....

He did win the Hatsu Basho in January with a solid 15-0 record that included an excellent yorikiri victory over Hakuho, but winning yusho is what is expected of him every basho as a yokozuna. However, of four tournaments at rank to date, he has an incredibly poor overall win/loss record of 44-16.

Despite that, I still remain impressed with the 15-0 yusho in January.

I note that Hakuho (by the above definition) has also been a disappointment of late, as he only won 3 of the 7 past bashos (coincendatally just like the other current Yokozuna Harumafuji) - instead of the 7 expected of him as a Yokozuna.

He's had one strong basho in four attempts. I've had my disagreements with Mark, but "has in large part failed to impress" is a perfectly reasonable summary for me.

Doitsoyama,

did you ever see Kokkai and Aran as they were coming through the ranks? Numbers analysis is unrelated.

If you read it again, you will see it means in his (Oosunaarashi) overall career when referring to Kokkai and Aran. Not only the juryo division.

Jeremy, that childish name calling is ST, not SF. And, "3 of the past bashos" should read 25 of the past basho unless there is a word missing. no? ALTesque that.

Sure I have. And I must say that Osunaarashi is looking much better than Kokkai to me who was very one dimensional. Aran was really good but two years older than Osunaarashi which is very important at this stage. While we are at that I'd also like to say that he can't compare with Baruto though.

My name is Jezz (or Jejima), please use one of them when referring to me. (For some reason you have decided to call me 'Jeremy' against forum rules.)

My quote should have read 3 of the past 7 bashos. The edit is now correct.

Harumafuji did not impress me today.

apologies - I didn't know you had changed your name. I just remembered this:

November (out October) issue of Conde Nast Traveller in the UK and elsewhere will carry a piece mentioning (in part) sumo for those interested.

So too will Der Spiegel - in German in September.

Eyes out folks!
