Always enjoy John's articles. He does very well managing the balance between providing something for the newbie and also for the long-time fan.

Good stuff.

Mark gets interviewed (audio) about sumo and himself-I found it very informative for those who are relatively new and want to know stuff about watching sumo and stuff. Helpful. At the end you can hear the Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. singing a part of the sumo song about the Hawaiians. Edited by Kintamayama

Takanohana was recently mulling over ideas that could see reduced ticket prices and fan interaction

Every so often one feels more keenly than usual the limitations in the grammatical structures of English.

K

Who is the new hack doing sumo writeups at the Japan Times?

Kyodo is one of the major news agencies. The (paper) Japan Times only uses reports from one or two agencies, mainly Kyodo, and also puts the reports onto the JT online. The 'specials' are only in the online version. John Gunning, OTOH, appears in both versions of the Daily Yomiuri.

Sand Storm Rising - Egyptian aims to become first Arab yokozuna - Nilesports.com (Words and Photos by John Gunning)
Longer version (in this months Sumo World)

There's a new Sumo World this month?

I was unaware that magazine still existed!

It's a matter of definition. Clyde has kept it going but for years I personally have never seen or heard of it on sale anywhere other than at a bookstall in the venue of each basho. The JSA people have been aware of the "ghost magazine" situation for years but continue to provide Clyde and his writers with Press Cards. John G of course would not need to do this as he has an ID from the Daily Yomiuri.

Mark on Osaka and 6 Ozekis.

"One of the best battles sumo has seen in the past two years, since Hakuho downed former yokozuna Asashoryu in a play-off at the September 2009 tourney, saw the same man claim a victory over his sekiwake foe."

I'm pretty sure Asashoryu won that playoff in September 2009.... http://sumoreference.com/Rikishi_basho.aspx?r=878&b=200909

Apologies if this has been posted in another thread, but it's a nice article about the men in the middle, the gyoji.

"They drank all night and wouldn't let us go," he says. "They made us sit in the seiza position with our feet tucked underneath on the wooden floor. So after I was a novice, I only grew 3 centimeters."

He stands 165 centimeters tall, but one talent of a gyoji is to appear short to make the wrestlers seem larger.

Thats a talent i would excel at too, unfortunately i'm also about 7 foot wide so i'd have the added, unwanted effect of making the rikishi look thin. :-D

Thank you for the great article :)

There are a few other errors that could do with a quick fix. The most obvious one being.... 'let's not forget Hak now has his 22nd top flight title and is within site of Asashoryu's 25 '
