Seiyashi 4,071 Posted February 5 Is it really necessary for a kabu holder to move into a stable before a rikishi from that stable can take over the kabu? Could it instead be possible that there was some emergency in Isenoumi that needed a more senior oyakata on a caretaker basis?

And he took on a new first name in the switch, according to the updated duties page (changes backdated to Feb 23). 立田川 豊英 Tatsutagawa Toyohide -> 錣山 矩幸 Shikoroyama Tsuneyuki; it's a first name ex-Terao used to use. Miyagino is listed third among toshiyori, behind the previously demoted Nakagawa and Tokiwayama, but ahead of all the "true" toshiyori-ranked oyakata. No change in his listed responsibilities so far, but I can't imagine that his assignment to the press club is going to survive the annual general update of jobs at the end of the month. Akinomaki 39,776 Posted March 21 Riji Hanakago, head of the compliance department, before his retirement in April (he turns 65 on the 8th) had an interview and got flowers o o no mention of going on as counsellor

There aren't a huge number of eligible or soon-to-retire names in this ichimon, either I wonder, given the recent news of his citizenship, if the name might be ticketed for Tamawashi (or potentially Takayasu?) Asashosakari 18,786 Posted April 17 So we presumably have at least half the answer to the "did ex-Hochiyama and/or ex-Sadanofuji become owners in their odd kabu switch?" question from back in December now. At least for Sadanofuji that's a "no". On 27/12/2023 at 18:03, Asashosakari said: Edit: They've both been toshiyori for so long that I think if either of them now owns their new share they'll be promoted to shunin right at the next opportunity in March/April. Not conclusive evidence, but FWIW Hochiyama is still just toshiyori. On 27/12/2023 at 18:03, Asashosakari said: (...) I'm honestly not sure if Hochiyama is the higher priority kabu target among the two. Sadanofuji had the much better career and he's from the same prefecture as Sakaigawa-oyakata. So much for that. 1
Yubinhaad 11,546 Posted May 7 Hochi reports that Oguruma-oyakata (former Ozeki Kotokaze) will retire from the Kyokai on the 11th, after just over two years of his consultancy term. He has decided to return his myoseki to Sadogatake-beya, which was his heya as an active rikishi - Kotoeko intai looming? Elsewhere, today was the last day at work for sewanin Fukuryudake, who turns 65 tomorrow. 3

This is entirely baseless speculation, but I wonder also if someone like Kisenosato might be beavering away in the background to try and secure one for Takayasu, in which case could we see Kotoyuki take over Oguruma with the Araiso name reverting to the Nishonoseki family for the former Ozeki's later use (which could still go to someone like Kotoeko on loan)? Seems like stranger things have happened.

The morning papers are out in a few hours, they may have details, if it's for real The article says that Nakamura joined ex-Kisenosato because he was excited at the prospect of working at the innovative heya that Nishonoseki aspired to create, but had grown disillusioned due to a difference in direction as to how the heya should operate. Given the recent Onosato/hazing issue, reading between the lines, I wonder if, like his nemesis Hakuho, Kisenosato has also been less focused and attentive as a shisho than he should have been--prompting Nakamura's desire to strike out on his own. Koorifuu 886 Posted May 9 (edited) I've no idea how much Onosato valued Kayo & Miyagi's company, but still there's some potential for that to be unsettling. That obviously applies to Shirokuma and everyone else just as well, but the steaks are clearly higher for the big man. Edited May 9 by Koorifuu

Or ex-Yoshikaze is just hard to get along with. I don't even necessarily mean that as negatively as it sounds, but considering they broke up Oguruma-beya so he and ex-Takekaze wouldn't have to work together (despite the possibility that Yoshikaze could have always branched out later!), perhaps he's just very strong-willed and too opinionated to serve as anybody's wingman for too long, and it's to everybody's benefit for him to stake out his own path.

Akinomaki 39,776 Posted May 17 2 hours ago, WAKATAKE said: Does this mean there is supposed to be a Nakamura beya that comes up? Yes, for quite a while tabloids and derived YT videos claim that Nakamura announced he'll go independent - without any official announcement reported. I posted this after a more reliable channel picked it up (the sumo bar of Tokotakara) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixRPD5yCTBU The implications for Onosato and Nishonoseki-beya are in the focus now, not the actual move by Nakamura, that is taken as definite - latest news from Weekly Post https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3rXbgQXmu4 though still no reliable schedule was announced - Nakamura commented on Onosato at the talk yesterday, without mention that he'll be in a different heya soon
