Tsuchinoninjin 1,269 Posted January 5, 2021 In the US, exchange student usually means short term < 3 months stay for cultural exposure. The 'exchange' is in some of the programs you house a student in the program then your child can be an exchange student somewhere else for very low cost. Long term collegiate studies is usually called international student.

For me an exchange student would go study somewhere else for a year or so as part of an exchange program and then return to the home university and complete the original course there. Exchange meaning that one is just a short term temporary student abroad and will not get a degree. Edited January 5, 2021 by dingo

The Japanese word used is the standard 留学生 (ryuugakusei), which, while most commonly translated as "exchange student," actually covers the entire gamut of foreigners who come to Japan to study, for whatever duration of time. So here, it simply means, "a foreigner studying in Japan." Edited January 5, 2021 by Kaninoyama 2

Just thought it was funny to think of someone staying in Japan over 5 years as an exchange student.

Î simply use the simplest available translation when I write a quick news item - the use of words is always related to Japan, so what you'd think while only regarding the use elsewhere is inevitably funny

If it seemed like that, I wholeheartedly apologise. Sorry for the off topic.
RabidJohn 1,787 Posted January 6, 2021 Don't apologise. I now know the difference between an exchange student over here and an exchange student in Japan! Thank you.
Kintamayama 45,132 Posted February 11, 2021 (edited) Terunofuji held his wedding ceremony today. The wife (26) is from Mongolia and they have been together since after the May 2015 basho. "I owe my return to my wife," he said. They applied for the marriage certificate three years ago. It was a thirty minute ceremony with about ten people present, including Isegahama Oyakata. I myself am not allowed to drive, so my wife does the driving. We like to go sightseeing as well." Q: "Where do you drive to?" W: "The farthest we got was Kyushu, for the first time." Q: You drove all the way to Kyushu?' W: "Yes, we rested on the way." T: "I go on jungyos and travel to the local bashos for my job, so if I see a nice place, I want to share it with my wife.." Q: "How did you propose?" T: "I just want us to create a happy household together, so I told her i would do everything to achieve that." Q: ""What kind of family would you like to have?" T: "I'd like to have a happy, positive family." W: ""I'd like us to have a calm, positive household." Q: "What are your wife's best clothes?" T: "Flashy and loud.. RabidJohn 1,787 Posted February 11, 2021 I don't know about "flashy and loud", as I've only seen the above photo, but she does traditional Japanese very well. I wonder if she might one day become the first former Mongolian okami-san.

Takayasu gambarized at the basho "for the baby" and after one year got the first kachikoshi again, double digits. Konomi wants to raise the baby "into a rikishi if a boy, an enka singer if a girl." "Recently as prenatal care I sing/play for it sumo jinku and the new song." The wedding reception may be next year, maybe the year after, depending on Corona. http://www.sanspo.com/geino/news/20200807/mrg20080704000001-n1.html Daughter born yesterday. Mother and daughter doing well. “If it’s a boy, he should be a rikishi. If she’s a girl, she should be an enka singer,” said the mom at some point. Kintamayama 45,132 Posted May 1, 2021 Juryo Chiyonoumi got married on April 29th to a 28 years old nurse. "She has been supporting me well. My way of thanking her is to win. I want to yusho in May!" he declared. "I thought she was really cute," he said of the first time he met her, during the winter jungyo in 2018. I hope we will be able to hold the ceremony at some point (Corona, no gatherings). My aim is Makuuchi and I shall gambarize even more to that end," he added. 3

He might want to start talking to Tatsutayama to not go in for sanyo, or else really butter up ex-Kirishima about taking over Michinoku.
