Although not nearly as common as in the past, arranged marriages in Japan still do regularly occur today. 

Even if he's not the "marrying kind," I suspect he'd still take a wife strictly for the sake of appearance and tradition.

It sticks out to me that recently all rikishi seem to be be marrying ladies above their own age. I wonder where that trend comes from... I don't think it's too common in Japanese society in general. Is there a general preference in sumo circles for more mature ladies?

According to the statistics published by the government of Japan, in 45% of cases the bride is the same age or older than the groom. I think I read somewhere that japanese society values the fact to have a slightly older wife. If someone living there has an opinion on that...

I'm glad that I'm not the only person who has considered that he might not be the "marrying kind." I've suspected that for several years, simply based on how stoic he appears in public and how closed off he's traditionally been. That would be difficult for a high-profile sekitori.

I'm not personally making that assumption; I just responded to the poster who pondered that possibility. Although if that were the case, more power to him. 

I believe his trademark stoicism is more a characteristic of how a rikishi is expected to ideally conduct oneself, and in that respect, Kise was near flawless. Endo is another example.

Now that he is retired, Araiso has opened up quite a bit and has begun to show more of his personality.

The engagement  of Takayasu (29) and enka singer Konomi Mori (30 - same year in school) 杜このみ was made public today. They want to hold a press conference together in Fukuoka on the 31st. They met first at the 2016 NHK charity ozumo, again at the 2017 Natsu Tagonoura-beya senshuraku party, where she sang, and have a relation for 2 years now. Takayasu and she sang both in 2016 and this year (below) at the charity ozumo - the videos on the 2016 thread are gone by now

I had heard a story that he did have a childhood sweetheart but his parents broke them up in order to concentrate on his sumo career and he hadn't met anyone since...  :(

Congrats to Takayasu, he seems a real happy man in these photos. Hopefully he'll get a boost on the dohyo and manage to keep his Ozeki rank in the upcoming basho despite that nasty injury.

Today was the wedding reception of Nishikigi and Momoyo, with about 400 sumo related guests. Their first daughter Fuuka  楓香 was born last November.

Not sure if this is the right place for this but can't find a more appropriate section.

Apparently the wife of Tagonoura Oyakata ran off with one of his disciples following Kisenosato's haircut ceremony last September.

They have since gotten divorced and the Oyakata himself recently has been seen strutting around town with a new lady friend.

From what the article said, that the deshi suddenly retired in September 2019, can we assume this was Akashiryu? He was the only Tagonoura rikishi that retired then. He didn't appear in the basho, going 0-0-7
