Engagement and marriage are important, engagement is a purely private affair, marriage mostly: the registration is to inform the authorities that you have married and to create a new family registry of the 2, who are up to then registered with their parents. The registration part is very unceremonious, you only have to hand in the form with the seals of the 2 and the witnesses, no need for them to be present. Divorce is just as easy - a few years ago there was an old story in a tabloid of an okamisan who got tricked with false information into putting the seal on the divorce paper and the oyakata similarly was persuaded to divorce her. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I think Takanohana was somewhere in Europe on a cure for a while during his record breaking kyujo. Of course, nowadays nobody may care anymore. In the past yokozuna got fired for watching a game, not just for playing (but at kyujo during a day of work). Had no idea that his newborn was from a different "source" though. Maybe that's why the apparent change of plans to remain in Japan.
