RabidJohn 1,849 Posted December 3, 2024 The RAH was packed out all five days in 1991, but that was on the back of four years of limited sumo coverage on C4. 'Sumo Prime Time' being effectively sumo's only coverage on YT is even more limited. As a UK resident it feels like you have to be 'in the loop' to find coverage of honbasho bouts now. RabidJohn 1,849 Posted December 4, 2024 (edited) Ticket prices will be adjusted daily according to demand. I'm feeling cynical, so I'd suggest waiting to buy. For reasons I've alluded to above, I don't believe there's anything like the demand in the UK that existed in 1991. I mean, look at how the activity on this forum has plummeted since Kintamayama and Natto were removed from YouTube. The NHK did way more than shoot itself in the foot in terms of international appeal. Edited December 4, 2024 by RabidJohn

Yes I thought that too, Isegahama oyakata is 65 next July, which (as I understand it) is the obvious time for Terunofuji to take over.
Tigerboy1966 1,455 Posted December 4, 2024 I really hope that Terunofuji makes the trip even if he has moved into a coaching role. Despite years of trying to interest my partner in sumo, Teru is the only wrestler she knows.

Kajiyanosho 38 Posted December 4, 2024 This needed a huge amount of fact checking and corrections but hopefully the end result isn't too bad! Sumo Grand Tournament back in London after 34 years - BBC News It took quite a while to help journalists understand the difference between given name, shikona, elder stock name, rank, JSA title etc.!

Thank you, the terms really come across as correct all around. If anything, I'm unsettled by their apparent conveyance of the message that this will be a competitive event on pair with honbasho, as opposed to a glorified exhibition that won't have any effect on the banzuke. That kind of deliberate misinformation, which I imagine stems from a concerted attempt to aggrandise the event in order to maximise their potential revenue, might've worked in 1991 but it won't take much for people to figure it out in this day and age. Kajiyanosho 38 Posted December 4, 2024 (edited) There was some incorrect information in the official invitation to today's event (which I hadn't seen until today) - the line about this being only the second time ever a sumo tournament is held outside Japan comes from there. It's understandable that journalists don't fact-check the event organisers. I had to explain that the winner isn't 'crowned Yokozuna' and the 'grand champion' bit isn't my wording, but I had to pick my battles. I would say that more than a deliberate attempt to create drama it's just not much time and incentive for journalists to get things completely right. At least in direct my experience. And I'm very excited about it! I won't be able to visit Japan until at least 2026, so this is a great opportunity for me and other fans after all - even if it's not quite the same as when the real titles and rankings are at stake.
