No such place as "Kazakhuustan", either, and no such indefinite article as 'a sumo' as in "What a sumo!"

But that's criticizing the man for his command of a second language, which I'm certainly in no position to do, particularly as his bag of clichés in an indicator of how good his English is.

I have so many answers on so many levels to that, but I like Hiro. His heart is certainly in the right place.

Commenting on sumo is not easy as a lot of things happen in a very short space of time.

A typical Tigerboy commentary would go something like this:

"Go on... get him... Oh sh*t... aaaaargh... buggerit"

I try to do it now and then on my vids for the Juryo bouts , but it's really hard. And I can correct my commentary before I upload, these guys are live. I find myself saying "you know" all the time. Raj and Hiro do that a lot too.

No but he is better than Hiro. I watch the broadcast, thanks to Kintamayama, with the volume set very low. That way the commentary is not nearly as annoying.

Sometimes less is more. A good show speaks for itself without a need for a constant stream of words.

Actually, I don't mind his "foreign" English" that much, it comes with the territory.

On the other hand, constant translation of Japanese sumo terms ("yorikiri the frontal force-out" etc.) gets annoying pretty quickly. At some point you need to decide what audience you are aiming at; a casual fan doesn't really care how you call a particular kimarite, but an experienced one already knows what it means.

There was less of that than I expected in London. I don't think he uttered the words 'yokozuna-grand champion' once.

I would say the shows know what audience they are for, and for that audience the silences aren't kept long and the Japanese terms are said together with their English translations. It's on NHK World after all, where many other shows for the same audience are shown and not on a dedicated Sumo Sports channel
