Reonito 1,781 Posted October 19 I wasn't sure what to expect at the start, but it was clear after the first two bouts (both tsuridashi) that this was an exhibition. Once you know that, it's quite enjoyable for what it is, just like jungyo bouts, shokkiri, etc. If that's not your cup of tea, not watching is an easy option. It is pretty amusing to listen to Hiro call the bouts as if they were real, though I am surprised some of his introductions of rikishi styles are so far off (e.g., Oshoma's strength on the belt). Presumably he has the script? I would like to see a list of kimarite compiled; we've definitely seen more tsuridashi already than we usually do in a year. Jejima 1,494 Posted October 19 The 'Easy' Yokozuna? 1
I am the Yokozuna 221 Posted October 19 It’s quite an interesting jungyo. If the ticketing process had been more straightforward, I would have definitely visited. Here’s hoping the Paris jungyo will have more tickets available during the initial booking rounds. For everyone attending this one I hope you enjoy the experience! Bunbukuchagama 974 Posted October 19 10 hours ago, Kajiyanosho said: Okay, I understand the feeling everyone has about the bouts when the organisers insist with the line that it's a "real" one. But I just saw Tobizaru missing the bus to the hotel. Someone lent him a bike renting card and he whizzed away on one. Priceless. How would you want them to advertise this - "For the first time in 30 years...Fake sumo tournament! Don't miss your chance to witness huge half-naked men without any acting talent pretending to fight to entertain you!" ? Every advertisement lies one way or another, that is the only way to sell things. On the other hand, you only need to ask one question if you are trying to predict how "real" a "basho" is going to be: Will it affect the next babzuke? If the answer is "no", you can bet your house on it being scripted.

It was just me and another person from the office running everything. It was really manic. I made a mistake too, writing "kensho-mawashi". Today we have more people helping, so it should be better and more stuff should go in. I'm in the process of sharing the list of kimarite and other stuff with other BBC colleagues. It really feels surreal! 4

Once you know that, it's quite enjoyable for what it is, just like jungyo bouts, shokkiri, etc. Watching the BBC on Wednesday evening I was ready to tear up my tickets for tonight. In the end we did go and thoroughly enjoyed it. Cons - obviously, the staged bouts. Pros - seeing the lower rankers doing moshiai and butsukari with Shonannoumi before the start - the yobidashi calling the first few bouts had such a beautiful voice, heard in absolute silence from the audience - seeing Kotoeiho and Abi's shiko - Three hours standing up in the gallery felt like joining in with your own keiko! - walking back to Kensington High Street and seeing Wakamotoharu and Wakatakakage (who was surprisingly huge close up) - also Mitakeumi with a very relaxed Shodai :) https://photos.app.goo.gl/26GwDEDzatmB3uJZ8
Heather82Cs 15 Posted October 19 As scripted as it may be, I think I have seen a couple bouts where it looked like the guy who was supposed to lose didn't make his opponent's life easy. There were a couple occasions in which I thought "if this was a fixed bout in a real basho, I'd be fooled". For Tobizaru and overall, we should account for unintended outcomes (like slippiotoshi) so probably they're adjusting the script daily.

Koorifuu 1,120 Posted October 19 Looked like Sadanoumi "went into business for himself", using wrestling slang. Shodai looked at him like 'what the hell, man' and then did a huge shrug to someone when going down the hanamichi.

A lot of it is annoyingly repetitive, but some of this can presumably be chalked up that it's a different audience every night, and they probably didn't watch the other days. He does offer some interesting tidbits. I did not know that Onokatsu was a fellow mathlete in school.
Morning 99 Posted October 19 (edited) There's indeed quite a few in the audience who haven't gotten the intro from the previous day. Also, there's exactly one kensho envelope for the whole tournament. The rikishi are hanging it back to the yobidashi and then it gets handed out again for the next fight (unless the yobidashi forgets to hand it to the gyoji like happened yesterday) Also the Hello Kitty kensho banner is a lot higher quality than the rest Edited October 19 by Morning

I've had enough Hiro for multiple lifetimes and that's without the earpiece. Somehow people keep trying to give me their spare ones, and I gotta stay polite when rejecting it!
