In addition to Kitanofuji and Mainoumi, now ex-Kotokaze/Oguruma joins the NHK commentator team, a contract that can be prolonged for 1 year every year. He's there on days 1 (with Mainoumi), 6 (with Kokonoe and Oyama/Chiyootori), 10 and 15. http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/local/chubu/news/20241108-OYTNT50016/

So far till day 6. Kitanofuji is not on schedule https://www.nhk.jp/p/ts/Z8WRRJ9K96/schedule/ - Hochi reports he's still resting http://hochi.news/articles/20241107-OHT1T51212.html?page=1

- I guess that means he will only have a video appearance again

Considering how long Tamawashi and Takarafuji have been facing each other, you'd have thought the latter would know by now not to put an arm with an injured elbow in danger of a kotonage attempt from the former.
It looked like a very painful reminder, and it made Takarafuji just bail out.

If Midorifuji was a playable character in a video game, that katasukashi of his would probably be nerfed...

Great showing from Wakatakakage against Kirishima. I'm so glad he's getting back to where he belongs.

A shonichi win over nemesis Oho is a good look for Hoshoryu.

Did they mean to give Onosato and Kotozakura the same script? The only difference was the side of the ring it started and ended at.

Hoshoryu winning on day 1? Maybe this is finally the tournament where he puts it all together and performs to the level I know he can.

Onosato and Kotozakura both won going backwards which is fine I suppose if the win is what matters, but that kind of victory don't impress me much (thanks Shania). Nice start by the birthday boy Daieisho, but the two top guys who rally impressed were Hoshoryu and WTK. Those two looked full of energy and determination and should be squaring off sometime this week.

Right before Takerufuji's loss I was surprised that Kotonishiki is still the only rikishi with two yusho as Maegashira.

After today's results the race to most maku'uchi wins in the calendar year is technically down to three:

  • Onosato, 58 wins
  • Kotozakura, 54 wins
  • Hoshoryu, 50 wins

In reality it's hard to see Onosato not winning this one.

However short a time he remained airborne, I was seriously impressed to see Shiden lift Mitoryu today. Getting him out of the ring really didn't seem to require that extra effort, however.

Kitanowaka's reaction to beating Kagayaki seemed even more jubilant than Ura's after felling Kirishima - just the feelings of a hard-fought bout hopefully and not the sum of his ambitions.

No complaints from me for our Ozeki so far.

Shodai seems to still be committed to doing zero prep for each day's opponent?

Onosato couldn't get anywhere near a decent grip on Oho but still pushed him out with relative ease. The gap between him and joi dwellers is immense.

It's great to finally have some sumo on the menu again!

Shishi has been handling his bouts fairly well the first two days. Last time I thought he'd be flattened in makuuchi. To his credit there's no sign of that yet, but the harder opponents are yet to come.

Both Atamifuji and Wakatakakage seem full of energy and spirit. Would be nice to see them mixing it up with the top ranks this basho and giving the sanyaku a proper challenge.

The ozeki were a bit shaky yesterday, with the exception of Hoshoryu who seems ready to make a statement this basho. Today Kotozakura was much more aggressive, but Onosato I guess it's still feeling the ozeki promotion celebrations in his bones.

Hi everyone!

We're here together for another basho!

And we hope no one has to travel to Japan this time and that everyone records the videos properly (looking at @Kintamayama)

Had to re-adjust my brain a bit when I realised those two are the same age and same build.

Happy days 1-3 to everyone! I'm sorry for not showing up much, but I've found difficult to make judgments on the basho.

The basho is in its early days, but I already find some rikishi more spirited than others. Onosato remains the talk of the town ATM. I expected him to have a so-and-so basho after getting the combo Yusho + Ozeki promotion (a lot of PR and less time for training). But he's holding on. He looked a bit shaky in the first two days, but today he dispatched Shodai in his usual manner. He keeps winning anyway, so perhaps it's just my imagination and he's going to have yet another domineering basho. His main problem could be Hoshoryu. I mean, where did my favored belt specialist go? The Nephew is assaulting people like Kirishima back in his Ozeki run. I never saw such a driving force in him. He stopped going for the belt first and he's now pushing people around - I guess he will go for the belt if the pushes aren't going to work.

In short, the two Ozeki look like the most likely front-runners. Kotozakura does not look able to join them - he's backpedaling a lot those days, perhaps he's nursing an injury. Kirishima - who I hoped was going to make another Ozeki run this time, perhaps also taking the Yusho - is definitively out, losing his balance all the time. Takerufuji also looks a bit shaky, but he can still rack up a lot of wins from M16w.

So, who are the dark horses this time around? Wakatakakage first comes to mind. My favorite WakaBro shows strength and balance - today he won by a whisker, but he won because he kept his balance for long enough. Atamifuji is also performing well - three wins in a row, first time since his days in the low-mid Makuuchi in 2023 (his two jun-yusho). I am skeptical about him pulling off a Yusho, but racking up 10+ wins would be nice. Who else? The 3-0 club includes Takanosho and Ichiyamamoto, both performing well, but I'd rather describe them as the dark horses' own dark horses given their past record.

That said, Onokatsu vs. Shishi takes the prize for the best match of Day 3. I seriously thought they were going for the water break - all while wrestling around on the belt instead of staying still waiting for the other guy to get tired first.

Perhaps Hoshoryu feels the need to push on before The Other Nephew (TM) passes him.

Any ballerina would be happy to get on point like Shishi did on the tawara today! An astonishing bit of escapology that led into a great bout - some excellent gyoji craft, too.

Has Kirishima overdone it in training again? I'm sure I read that he was piling up the training bouts in a bid to regain his ozeki rank this time.
The outcome so far feels reminiscent of when he was going for the rope at the back end of last year.

Whoever talked some sense into Hoshoryu - whether that's his uncle, his shisho or himself - has done a good job.
No f****** about really suits him.

It's a lesson any of Oho's high-ranked opponents should take to heart. I like that he's reached a stage where if they give him the slightest opportunity he will punish them for it.

It seems to me that over the last couple of days several rikishi have got away very quickly at the tachiai. I'm surprised that there have been no matta's called for premature starts.
