Takerufuji will graduate from this list in January; Oshoumi has a good shot if he can beat Chiyosakae tmorrow. Wakatakakage and Kayo are the longest of long shots, but still have hopes the bottom drops out of juryo.

Oshoumi's win, coupled with Hitoshi's and Kitaharima's losses, means he's coming up for sure.

I have a few thoughts on the list.

- a few of them seem to only be there because they are hafu. I'm not sure they really belong on this list based on their results. I would remove Nabatame, Maikeru, Itadaki and Kaitoma. Otani and Tanji (why no Taiga?) on the chopping block if they don't improve. And former Makuuchi Kotokuzan is a much more noteworthy hafu than all of them, he should be on the list based on this criteria.

- You have all of the tsukedashi on the list except for Fukai, Asashiyu and Daishomaru. Asashiyu I can understand (though I wouldn't mind him on the list) and Daishomaru is over the hill (though he was a long time sekitori mainstay), but why not Fukai? I can see him making it to Juryo in the near future.

- Perhaps Kitaharima deserves a spot on this list after his recent resurgence?

- Furanshishu is the only rikishi from the Philippines, I guess that's kind of noteworthy. though he's not very good. I can go 50/50 on him.

- Maybe add Shoketsu, the oldest guy on the banzuke. Sure he's no Hanakaze, but 47 is still noteworthy.

- what's the reason for Higonomaru?

Of course, this is your list, you can do what you like with it.

Thanks for the feedback. The half -foreigners are there because that's how this all started. I forgot about Koutokuzan, just like I left out Tochimusashi after he dropped back to Makushita.. As for Fukai, he's been around for quite some time and I still feel he's not good enough. Kitaharima is a good idea. Shouketsu too. And Satonofuji is no longer the yumitorikishi so I'll need to deal with that as well.  And Tanji is better than Taiga for now, so I decided to leave the Tiger out for now. Tanji isn't that spectacular either, but half-foreigner. All in all, it's a subjective list of who I think should be followed. It's way too long, inconsistent as you rightly pointed out, and probably something we can do without, but it's stronger than me.. Points taken, will incorporate some of them next basho.

Higonomaru? Gut feeling. Wrong, I guess.

Tanji being makushita 29 at 17 is impressive, and I think he has a bright future - my interest in him isn't about him being half. I believe according to Gurowake's calculations, going into last basho he was the lower division rikishi furthest ahead of same age peers; that certainly counts as standing out to me. If he cant progress in 2024, then maybe it's worth a reconsider, but for now he should stay put in my view.

Who cares what I think®, but "Lower division celebs" seems to be about either kids on their way up, or well-known veterans on their way down, or unique individuals (some hafu, for instance).

For next basho, Takerifuji and Oshoumi should fall up.  Kayo should follow soon.

I guess sons and brothers are permanent, so ...

If Kazekeno and Otani have peaked and continue slumping, they should leave the list [I don't care what University or heya is involved].

If lineage is a factor in this thread, then there's also Hokutenkai, who's Takanoiwa's nephew. He might've been a makushita journeyman for a few years now but I still rate him very high on the "non-sekitori" list. It certainly feels like his ceiling is higher than most of his peers, and that he could feasibly make it to juryo if he manages to optimise his performance for a couple of consecutive basho.

Was on the list, lost his place as he seems not to be going anywhere. OTOH, he's Takanoiwa's nephew. OTOOH, Its Takanoiwa..

My comment on Hakuyozan on another thread just reminded me of the mini-discussion about Fukai here.

Much like the aforementioned, it felt like he returned way too early from a serious-looking injury. It seemed like he took a step forward when he got the makushita yusho and spent a few more basho hovering in the first ten ranks, then it all unraveled in Natsu '22. He was visibly still limping badly in Nagoya, and even Aki and Kyushu - albeit to a lesser extent. I don't think he's been the same rikishi as the one who clinched that yusho, so yeah, another one we could possibly add to the "hasty return permanently damaged his career" list.

On an almost unrelated note, I just realized that Fujiazuma seems to be making himself a new home in Sandanme. :-(

In the remote case there's anyone here who isn't aware of it;

"Haafu" is just "half", after it goes through a transcription cycle where "half" is converted into katakana (ハーフ) and then romanized again into default romaji (haafu). Kind of like playing the Broken Telephone Game with a friend and it doesn't sound like the same thing when it gets back to you.
