Some celebs kyujo. Suguro (21-5 when he's healthy..), at his highest rank of Makushita 50, just got back in July after missing May, Ishiura (third straight kyujo), makes me increasingly think he's going to retire soon, Daiseizan (18-3 career), the promising Inner Mongolian at his highest rank of Sandanme 10 and half Turkish Hokuouzan (Hagiwara)  out for the sixth straight basho and down to Jonokuchi 15 with no more real estate. . Geez.

He and Oshoumi both have had a disappointing careeer.  They came in together in March 2020, and overachieved their first year ( Oshoumi Ms35, 28-7; Hagiwara Sd19, 26-9 and eventually Ms35).

Then both were injured -- twice.  Hagiwara is out after a yoritaoshi that must have torn up his knee, because he was wearing a brace for quite awhile.

He's got Denuma from sandanme tomorrow. He should win that one but is likely to run into Daiseryu in the "semi-finals". He would be second favourite in that match but he has a chance.

The peculiar thing is that he changed his shikona from Asonoshiki to Asonayama in July 2020 when his near-namesake was already ozeki.

Can anyone shed light on the Makushita yusho race scheduling? I figured they'd match same-heya Shosei and Asonoyama with Daiseiryu and Narutaki, but instead the latter two are paired up, while the former two both get Sandanme opponents, potentially leaving us with five 5-0 rikishi instead of the requisite four. @Gurowake @Asashosakari

I wonder if they started making the matchups from the top up, already had the first three quarterfinals scheduled, then realized Shosei and Asonoyama were in the same stable so just grabbed them opponents from whoever was left instead of going back and changing stuff.
