I mean, this sort of thing comes up routinely and they know how to avoid same-heya matchups without unnecessary cross-division scheduling. They just had to change the order to split these two in the round of 16, so it's not like they didn't know. And it potentially complicates the yusho race going forward. I figured they'd match same-heya Shosei and Asonoyama with Daiseiryu and Narutaki, but instead the latter two are paired up, while the former two both get Sandanme opponents, potentially leaving us with five 5-0 rikishi instead of the requisite four. @Gurowake @Asashosakari There's nothing unusual about the pairings. Are you saying that they should have done something different than normal because of the chance that there's 5 5-0s in Makushita? I fail to see why they would care. Can you find any situation where they broke from the normal pattern of going around do-beya matchups in Round 5 because of the division border? I'm not saying it hasn't happened, but I'd be surprised.

Tigerboy1966 1,376 Posted September 19, 2022 Just an update on the Asa vs Aso situation. Asa won of course, and faces Yuma next. Aso got past Denuma as predicted but he will not be facing Daiseiryu in the semi-final as his veteran stablemate Shosei derailed the rising sandanme star Kototebakari. So that means Daiseiryu vs Shosei, with Aso facing the very promising sandanme leader Wakanosho. So depending on how the chocolate digestive disintegrates we will get either 2 or 3 men at 6-0. If Aso gets past Wakanosho (I don't think he will) he is likely to get yet another sandanme opponent for his final match in regulation... and then a play-off against Asa for the yusho. If this makes no sense, blame Asda for putting Zubrowka on special offer.

Katooshu 3,135 Posted September 19, 2022 (edited) It will be a good matchup and clash of styles. Wakanosho is very promising indeed, but in his career has only beaten 2 opponents who ever KK'd in makushita, and none on the form that Asonoyama is now - it's a big jump from who he's beaten to someone performing at mid-makushita level. And as we've seen, Kototebakari had a rough introduction to makushita. Waka's thrusting is fierce, but he'll be overpowered if Asonoyama gets a hold of him. Both have what it takes to beat the other, but who will implement it better? I hope the latter, because I want to see the big Asonoyama vs Asanoyama showdown Edited September 19, 2022 by Katooshu
