Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

MK for Mitakeumi. With both Yokozuna out and Goeido and Takayasu  bad this is a terrible basho for him.

Yep. And one win was a freebie after Kakuryu pulled out. Four defeats in a row to end the basho. Very poor.

With Shodai already fix for jun-yusho and the gino-sho without condition, there was nothing left as extra motivation for Hokutofuji

Sponsors shouldn't withdraw the kensho when their favourites drop out, rather put it on interesting bouts like that one.

EDIT: Granting the NSK is flexible enough to allow that.

10-5 for Asanoyama keeps the Ozeki-run nicely on track. Not enough for the promotion this time, but it could count as the middle basho with his 11-4 at Komusubi last time around.

Nice win by Onosho. Goeido ends on 5-10. He, Takayasu and Tochinoshin managed just 16 wins between them ...

Looks like the sponsors didn't cancel any kensho for the last bout

Man. He earned it. He deserves it.

The most improbable yusho we'll ever see in our lifetimes.

Congrats Tokushoryu.

almost all eyes will be focused on the big Tokushoryu v. Takakeisho bout (can't wait to see how many kensho that final bout will attract),

Much less than a bout with Goeido would have had

I counted 60 kensho for the final bout.  Can you get more than 60?

Tokushoryu is a veteran -  he knew just the right way to deal with Takakeisho

That was beautiful. Tears of joy. The man worked his entire career to get to this point. Well done.

Well, that sure did happen. Congratulations to Tokushoryu for this bright spot on his career. Whatever else happens, no one can take this away from him. This is a Rocky II moment.

We saw a lot of cool stuff today, really, but it's all overshadowed by the yusho. And people said this would be a 12-3 basho. I ever heard people saying it would be 11-4! So, the next time someone tells you something is impossible, remember this and take it to heart: anything can happen in sumo.

(Special props to Ikioi for turning around that atrocious start. That was a mighty achievement in its own right.)

Another Hatsu basho, another hatsu yusho. Kotoshogiku in 2016, Kisenosato in 2017, Tochinoshin in 2018, Tamawashi in 2019, now Tokushoryu.

Very impressed with Tokoshoryu's composure. I would have preferred a Shodai Yusho, or Takakeisho, but 14-1 is always worth a Yusho, especially if you beat the direct rival and the remaining high ranker (the only one in form aswell).

Wild ride all in all.

Tokushoryu now is the oldest Japanese first yusho winner - and 3rd over all. Kyokutenho and Tamawashi were older.

Wasn't Kyokutenho Japanese already when he won the yusho?

Would it be easier for him to get a kabu if he got to the sanyaku ranks?

No.  He has enough sekitori basho under his mawashi to qualify  for a kabu.  It's only a matter of finding one that is available.

I do wonder now if this yusho just might have improved the odds of that.
