I wonder whether Onomatsu is in poor health. I don't think he used to be so confused.

He probably read about people laughing about that and actually made a point to clearly mention east and west in another mono-i (Abi - Meisei day 14) but given the absence of mistake and time he took between each word I believe he was repeating what the voice in his hear was telling him to say...

I feel terrible for him.  It must be infuriating to him as well.

Article from Nikkan.  The yokozuna delibaration committee actually complained about something that everybody can actually agree on this time, they asked head judge Oonomatsu to be more precise and accurate during his explanations to the crowd after a monoi.

"It's truly my fault for lacking training" reflected Oonomatsu

Why the hell is he paid to be head judge then ?...

I'm guessing stage fright.  I'm pretty sure he's quite coherent in his everyday  dealings. Some people, otherwise very coherent, bottle up when asked to speak in public. Now, why on earth was he chosen to become head shinpan with all that is called for in this position, that is another question. I remember Furiwake getting a shot at head shinpan and the resulting fiasco, but that's a different story entirely.

Could it have anything to do with the politics surrounding the dissolution of the Takanohana Ichimon?  If I remember correctly, Onomatsu oyakata was one of the first defectors, and his promotion to head shimpan came around the same time.

I agree he seems to realize when be is lost  and looks more scared than anything else. Sometimes he even looks like he is about to break down in tears. He messed up many times before so I guess he grew even more scared to speak with so many eyes on him.

To guess how many tournaments Hakuho will win before he retires is a game we probably all play. But it's really nothing more than conjecture. He could possibly win one or two more. He also may not win any more yushos at all--but even so, 42 is a rather nice number with which to finish a career. :-)

Here is an interesting aside, which not everyone might know. Hakuho and Douglas Adams (he who gave us 42 as the answer to the meaning of Life, the Universe, and everything) share the same birthday - March 11th. And I feel honoured to share it with two such illustrious persons too!

It's also pretty hard to do public announcements with some speaking in your ear and the substantial delay from the PA if you're not used to it. How many times per basho he actually has to explain something? Maybe just have him sit in an empty kokugikan reading iroha for a while or something.

All the others do it pretty well under the same terms..

He couldn't piece together two words and the crowd, including the other shimpants, were rolling over laughing. Should be a thread here somewhere.

Hate to sound ignorant, and it's a bit (Iamgoingoff-topic...), but who's Orora?

The biggest name in sumo.

You don't have to be ill to have poor communications skills. Work in the tech industry for a few months if you don't believe me.

Not a Teppanyaki owner?

Some afterthought, tongue in cheek:

  • The lone spectator who threw a zabuton at you-know-who on 15th day deserves a Kanto-sho.
  • Even a bad basho has some drama of its own.
  • Shimpans nearly stole the show.
  • Is there any techie among us who can hack Eikokurai computer so that he can consistently watch  basho from the world's largest communist nation?

Haha. Thank you for your concern, but you needn’t worry. I’m starting a new job soon so I doubt next time I’ll be able to watch live anyway. Someone always downloads one of the digest videos from YouTube and shares it on one of China’s equivalent websites, so I’m generally able to follow it just fine. I only hope whoever it is that’s doing that stays interested in sumo for as long as I do! They’re the lifeline for the small community of Chinese sumo fans. :)

If I´m not mistaken, 42 is considered as a very unlucky number in Japan (floors/rooms being skipped, etc).
