After party- Hakuhou admits injuries and talks about Kisenosato

Recommended Posts

"I could hardly walk," said Hakuhou at the day- after press conference. He injured his left knee before the basho and added a right toe injury on day 3. He could not do a right foot first step tachiai at all. "I just had to stand up with both my feet planted," he explained. As for the Kisenosato match, he purposely relinquished Kisenosato's favorite left inside grip to his opponent, yet won in the end. "If it was destined to be, he would have won with his favorite grip and become Yokozuna.." said Hakuhou candidly.

Whoa- all that jazz, all those rensho, with multiple injuries? This adds to the greatness of this basho's performance tenfold.

Woah... I'm a hater of Hakuho at times. But the man commands awe and respect. I am jealous of his fans.

I was somewhat floored when he mentioned being injured during his yusho interview.

The bloke never gives anything away, and suddenly he's admitting to being injured?!

I'm not normally a conspiracy theorist, but I reckon he's got some PR type advising him on how to become popular... ;-)

Injured? What a load of malarkey. He jumped to his feet instantly and practically danced up the exit aisle after Kinsenosato's loss on day 14.

Actually, that's how it usually works. You admit your injuries after the basho is over. Not the first time Hakuhou talks extensively about his injuries after a basho. You don't admit it during the basho to prevent your opponent from making use of this information, and say, step on your toes.

Terunofuji talked about his injuries yesterday as well. During the basho he just nodded sadly.

Well, in case of Terunofuji or also Tochiozan - with the "onsen-towel"-like taping on his shoulder - the bandages and tape do all the injury-talking...

I noticed the extra shove from Kotoshogiku. I also noticed that there were no dramatic meltdowns over it. LOL! Extra shoves only seem to cause freakouts and calls for banishment when Hakuho does it. (Laughing...)

But what I found most interesting was Hakuho's admission that he purposefully gave up Kisenosato's preferred left inside grip. I've often suspected that Hakuho sometimes gives his opponents "chances" and its up to the opponent to capitalize. Kisenosato couldn't.

I don't believe him! What is he trying to say? Maybe "I'm so good that I am able to get a zensho yusho with a couple of injuries"? Come on...

Ozeki. Yokozuna. Therein lies the difference. And the malice. Hakuhou (who I love dearly..) does it with a vengeance occasionally. Against Harumafuji, he did it gently, but did it.

Why lie? Does Hakuhou really need to prove anything after 37 yushos?

Hak's just a pretender. 40 yushos is the benchmark of a real yokozuna.

Nothing to prove, but if he were doing this it would be because he's playing head games again (already? still?) :-S

There is more about Kisenosato. "He's a strong Ozeki. But he has shortcomings.. his habitual behavior, his way of thinking.." added Hakuhou.

Hakuhou holds his annual international "Hakuhou Cup" tournament for youngsters. Some rikishi co-operate. Kisenosato never shows up. "He should show his face at the tournament. He can give some advice to the kids and stuff, " said Hakuhou.

The rikishi-kai (rikishi's association) shot a fan-service video of all the guys singing the "Hiyonoyama (that sumo mascot yellow doll) Counting Song" for the benefit of the fans before the January Basho. Kisenosato looks like someone put a gun to his head and when everyone is waving he is clearly very much not into it. "What's that all about? It's important to go after your one goal in life but if that is all he has he will never become number one. There are so many things to do outside of the training room that can help him achieve his goal as well.." said Hakuhou.

Wow, I don't remember ever reading something remotely like this..

Head games with something that already happened? I think he's just boasting. I think he dislikes Kisenosato very much.

Head games in support of something to happen in 2 months. Keeping up the aura of physical invulnerability, perhaps? (I can't beat this guy when he's healthy, and now he claims he was injured the whole time? I have no shot to beat him at all, ever)

So Kise's not a people person. Big deal. Hak's saying this stuff just to promote his personal tournament. He should otherwise keep his mouth shut about other rikishi, especially since he's no longer the head of that rikishi association thing by his own choice.

Agreed. For someone with a right toe injury, he didn't hesitate to kick Hatumafuji with his right foot while balancing on an injured left leg.

Was this from the Sunday Sports right after the basho? If so, Hakuho had to comment about Kisenosato because they were doing the usual post-basho interview and one of the specific questions was "What advice would you give to Kisenosato?". There was a bit of an awkward silence, and then Hakuho said he needs to interact with the fans and other rikishi more/in a better way. Hakuho also said Kisenosato needs to lower his back, which I think we can all agree is good, honest advice.

Well, that's just my ignorance showing then. I may have binge-watched the last 5 years worth of Makuuchi action on your channel, but it's lacking in yusho interviews so I'll blame you. :-P

And I think my impression of Hak's supposed tight-lippedness arose from an interview another esteemed member of this forum did with Jason a couple of months ago, so I feel totally absolved!

Anyhow, I came here in search of enlightenment and I'm still finding it, so thank you for all your info.
