Very first match of the proper tournament Day 3, thanks to Araibira. Something interesting (to me at least) happened, spoilered below.

Nakayama looks to be in clear control and about to push Nakata out when he steps forward out of the ring before Nakata has even come close to touching outside. Gyoji correctly gives it to Nakata, but neither of them can see the gunbai at that point. They spend a few seconds trying to figure out how they're supposed to get back up on the dohyo before the gyoji announces the results of the point. Nakayama stands there looking extremely confused, wondering how the hell he lost the match.

Terunofuji will get his double digits,

I'm not a believer. But 8-7 or 9-6, yes.

day 3 Jonokuchi highlights
some action in the lowest division today !
* Nakata (0-1) - Nakayama (0-1) was comedy capers as already pointed out by Gurowake
* Kiyomusashi (0-1) - Takiguchi (0-1) was 9.0 points for the gymnastic move

* Akutsu (0-1) - Terumichi (0-1) was very nice to watch, don't blink your eyes though
* Mori (0-1) - Hayatozakura (0-1), simply an epic Jonokuchi battle !

day 3 other lower division highlights
Jd : Yahagi (1-0) - Okinoiwa (1-0) & why even bother ?

Sd0 : Maenofuji (0-1) - Rikito (0-1), entertaining

Sd1 : Koike (1-0) - Yoshinokuni (1-0), short bout but long mono-ii decision, and did they choose right ?

Sd+ : Masutoo (1-0) - Aratoshi (1-0), if only for the sound effects :-P , though a nice fight as well

Ms- : Wakakeisho (1-0) - Daiseiho (1-0), round and round they go :-)

Ms+: Onami (0-1) - Irie (0-1), some suspense (and mind the pre-bout earthquakes ;-) ) !

J- : Kizenryu (1-1) - Kyokutaisei (1-1), nice finish
J+: Ichinojo (2-0) - Sadanofuji (2-0), first real test for No Jo ?

To all, how many of these decisions went wrong according to you ?

Without different camera angles it's impossible to tell. At least a few bouts bouts looked like they could've gone the other way.

Today I skiped live sumo coverage, spontaneously left home, went down the street 2 blocks, and was cheering to the homecoming German football team. Sometimes you have to make strange choices in priority. :-D

I think Osuna crossed a line today, against Kisenosato, with a closed fist in the tachiai

I think Kise was expecting it and yet he still walked straight into it. But like Triple Masu implies above, I don't think Osuna will get away with that kind of tactic against Hak or HF.

I like Osunaarashi a lot... But that was quite nasty today. Closed fist at the tachiai. mhh... He hit with his arm..? Not an apparent hansoku... Very close though. I liked the bout after the tachi-ai. Kise didn't lose position, Osuna tried to pull out, tried to take the initiative, but was pushed back and lost justly... Good bout nevertheless.

I agree, Oosunaarashi almost crossed the line. That wasn't very far from hitting him with a fist -- the side of a fist, but still. If he continues like this I hope the kyokai powers will gently remind him that this is not the proper way of sumo.

You made the wrong choice in my not-so-humble opinion.

I didn't think Suna's arm/fist looked as blatant in slow motion replay but... Anyway, I was quite impressed with Kise's ability to absorb this and not lose his concentration and hold out to beat Suna. I realize Kise is pretty good at absorbing punishment and still winning, but he took it to new heights today.

I seem to recall a few years ago that Harumafuji appeared to knock out Kise with a harite on the tachi-ai, moments later Kise woke up and won the fight. I was going to find the video, but then I remembered they were all deleted. :(

I guess that almost one million fans in Berlin agreed with torquato... ;-)

The most popular music in America is country western. Should I infer that Willie Nelson and Garth Brooks are superior to Beethoven and Bach?

World Cup = Crud Plow

The Great Kaisei would probably agree with me.

Is kachi-age potentially lethal?

I guess with a good hit you might break someone’s neck…?

Endō is disappointing.

Really nice defense by Harumafuji, I love how he’s always able to stay on his feet when any other rikishi would’ve touched down; too bad he lost.

Osunaarashi needs a reality check pretty soon. If he keeps on being successful with this "cheap shit" (as Masu³ puts it), it will turn into a habit, and he will drop in my sympathy meter even below Wakakirin or Hoshikaze.

That boy needs to learn sumo, but who's gonna teach him?

That's a really good question, but with a shisho who barely scraped by the requirements for becoming oyakata and no other sekitori in the heya for ages, I think the obvious answer is "Noone" :(

Edit: And even the Takanohana Ichimon is not exactly teeming with sekitori at the moment...

I am a fan of his, but his brand of sumo is becoming very worrying very quickly...

Fellow Osunaarashi fan chiming in but also troubled to see him continue to use his forearm to the face trick over and over again. It's easy as a fan of a rikishi to look the other way and mention that, for example, today there were lots of slaps to the face, neck pushes, head pull downs and Hakuho and his "recent" foul temper to try and justify Osunaarashi's fighting methods but the fact remains that it's damaging to him as a rikishi and sumo itself. He seems to be a great guy with a great heart, I hope he sets his mind in the right direction.

I am surely no fan of Osuna's forearm-to-the-face-tachiai, but I am even more surprised that his opponents were not able to adapt to his technique so far.

He's been doing this for a few bashos now and we can assume rikishi study video footage of their opponents nowadays.

Sidestep him, grab his forearm, whatsoever. But don't run face first into your misery! Let's see how the Yokozunae cope with this.

Hakuho is not a 'Japanese' Yokozuna. Not even in a figurative sense. He's just too foul-mannered.

In fact, I'll go so far as to say that his current behavior is bad for sumo.
