I am really getting paranoid now.... after watching niji for about 4 hours without problems how great are chances the streaming breaks away exactly after makuuchi gets started. I could bet it will work again fine after makuuchi ends.

This may have come up before and it is of dubious advantage, but for several months there has been an O-zumo application for smartphones that gives lots of updated info regularly, and also quickly uploaded videos of makuuchi bouts. The drawbacks: It's all in Japanese, you probably need a Japanese iTunes account (or whatever Android users have) to get it, it is only makuuchi videos, it costs 500 yen a month (unless you are happy with only seeing 1 makuuchi bout a day, which is free.

I don't know if they have a gara-kei apuri (application for flip phones) or not, but I doubt it, and it still wouldn't be available outside Japan I expect. The maker of the app might actually make enough money from the foreign market if they could make an English localization.

Most certainly they bought the distribution rights only for Japan, so it's not available outside. "Make enough money" certainly depends on the fees for distribution outside of Japan (if this isn't already sold exclusively).

I tried niji for the first time this week and unlike NHK World Premium, which broadcasts the digest at 2 am (Japanese time) the NHK sougou does it at 3:40 am. I thought someone might want to know.

It works for me in Sweden. (both pay and non-pay version, Andriod)

I installed it when I was in Japan during Aki-basho though (does that make a difference?)

At the end of every (?) day they show some special bonus material. On the last day a lengthy Q&A talk with Kotooshu and someone else, at least on days 13 and 14 they are showing old footage of the early Showa 30ies (1950ies?).

Finally got around to reviewing the downloaded clips:

Day 1 & 9: Nagoya basho highlights; Goeido ozeki promotion stuff; jungyo highlights (not sure which tour/event(s), probably from between Nagoya and Aki)

Day 2 & 10: Kokugikan special (about 15 mins); Goeido ozeki promotion stuff (cut differently, longer)

Day 3 & 11: Aki 1954 reels, part 1 (technically parts 1 & 2 according to the on-screen graphic)

Day 4 & 12: Aki 1954 reels, part 2 (technically parts 3 & 4) - total running time about 30 mins

Day 5 & 13: Aki 1955 reels, part 1

Day 6 & 14: Aki 1955 reels, part 2 - total running time about 38 mins

Day 7: public Q&A with Kotooshu and ex-Iwakiyama at the sumo school, part 1

Day 8 & 15: public Q&A with Kotooshu and ex-Iwakiyama at the sumo school, part 2 - total running time about 38 mins

Day 3 & 10: Kyushu 1957 reels, part 2 - total running time about 32 mins

Day 4 & 11: Hatsu 1954 reels - running time about 22 mins

Day 5 & 12: Natsu 1954 reels - running time about 21 mins

I had lots of problems over the weekend. But I guess the fault was rather on my internet connection. Today Niji works perfectly well for me. Left it on over night and it ran through for the last 9 hours.

still no video, and it looks bad for today. But (perhaps) in the 2:end half of Makuuchi it will connect/work again. So it was for me for a couple of days ago...! I think Niji have a issue about this problems.
