Akinomaki 41,717 Posted January 20, 2014 I had tried this also and after one error message the stream displayed fine in vlc with this address. The recording to mp4 was fine. I also for the first time began to dig into the command line features, because I want the recording to start automatically when my PC is switched on (preferably by someone else to do this at the time the broadcast starts, when I am not yet there) - I can't find another way than a batch file in autostart with some lines like Torquato showed. So far I tried this, but it won't work cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC" vlc rtmp://202.131.233.170/live/ubslive2009 --sout"#duplicate{dst=standard{access=file,mux=mkv,dst='C:\Users\aki\Videos\mongol.mp4'},dst=nodisplay}" If you're on a PC it should be vlc.exe. And why not in one line "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe"? I couldn't open the adress rtmp://202.131.233.170/live/ubslive2009 directly in VLC. On unix/ linux the comandline tool 'rtmpdump' does the trick. I just tried it. rtmpdump --live --rtmp "rtmp://202.131.233.170/live/ubslive2009" - | vlc -Sure there will be an equivalent on Windows.... I rather like to have a not that long line (and used that from the online help), ".exe" is not necessary. Using just: vlc rtmp://202.131.233.170/live/ubslive2009 in the .bat file starts the stream at once, but no recording: the --sout part seems to be the problem. I may try rtmpdump for windows, together with rtmdumphelper that sounds to be good solution.
torquato 1,075 Posted January 20, 2014 (edited) Is there any way to use Niji on a Mac? The download appeared to be .exe only. Yes and no. There is no Mac version. But you can run it on a windows install inside a virtual machine (VMWare Fusion, Parallels) though. This is how I do it on my Mac. torquato 1,075 Posted January 20, 2014 So far I tried this, but it won't work cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC" vlc rtmp://202.131.233.170/live/ubslive2009 --sout"#duplicate{dst=standard{access=file,mux=mkv,dst='C:\Users\aki\Videos\mongol.mp4'},dst=nodisplay}" the --sout part seems to be the problem. Yes it is. You forgot the equals sign after sout. And the quotation marks might be problematic to. This worked for me in a test. --sout=#duplicate{dst="standard{mux=ts,dst=Z:\winshare\test.ts,access=file}",dst=nodisplay} Be careful with the container format. Letting vlc mux the stream as matroska (mkv) drops the video part for me. I record as .ts and convert later. BTW why duplicating the stream in the first place, if the duplicated stream is not used for anything? This has the same effect: --sout=#standard{mux=ts,dst=Z:\winshare\test.ts,access=file} Good luck.

Gusoyama 104 Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) The thing that naysayers don't understand is that there are VERY few people in this thread that want something for nothing. We have been happy with the stream up to this point. We would be happy with a REASONABLE fee. We are not happy about an exorbitant fee for the same crappy stream. This is 2014. Japan is a highly technical nation. This could be done correctly, and for a reasonable cost. They just don't want to. Personally, I would love to see it on something like ESPN3. There's cricket matches, rugby, Australian rules football, sailing, curling, judo, etc. on there, why not sumo? Edited January 21, 2014 by Gusoyama

Perhaps they are fed up giving stuff away?
Asameshimae 220 Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) I'd like to reiterate what I saw a few here and there say. They are not merely alienating foreign fans. Many diehard fans in Japan who don't really even care that much about the upper divisions, watch the lower ones on the feed so they can see the wrestlers they like. This is a bad move all around. Any planned change in procedure in sumo has always happened in the January. I don't think we'll see any change in the pricing or format of the feed until next January, regardless of the response to this new system. Asashosakari 20,207 Posted January 21, 2014 By the way, for those who have managed to pay for the stream - are they still using a second camera for the sekitori divisions, as they trialled in Kyushu?

yorikiried by fate 2,038 Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) Wow, no use to be friends with computers, if you are unable to read real language. I hate to say it, but I don't have any clue how to get this niji thingy running. I downloaded the player. I registered. I confirmed registration. No moving pictures, though. Do I have to choose a certain entry in the player (there's NHK, but nothing happens)? How can I choose "any channel" on their website in order to setup VLC through the backdoor? Why do I need to install their player in the first place, if I'm going to use VLC? Help? Edited January 22, 2014 by yorikiried by fate

I had a lot of these same questions, and found pretty much all my answers upthread. You have to download and install the NIJI software, then you have to register. Registration is in English, or at least mine was - there's the usual email stuff - verification that it's you that registered and the like. During registration you give it your email address, and pick a password and a user name. AFAICT the username is only used when they send you email ("Dear xxx"). When you open the player you have to login. The login "button" (actually, it's text) is on the upper right, and that gives you a popup window where you enter your email and password. There's a checkbox below the password box to stay logged in if you want. There are several different stations to pick from - that's the vertical list to the right of the screen. (to the right of that is where the programming for the selected station is listed - if there's nothing there, click the leftmost of the tabs above that area) There are 2 NHK stations. This message from upthread talked about which one to double-click for sumo. NIJI is starting with Juryo, which began on day 11 around 3pm JST (about 1am my time - EST in the US) If you want to watch NIJI through VLC, here's a link to the message about that. As I said, I got it. Didn't know about the login button in the corner of the player. I got prompted to enter email and pw, when I double-clicked the station (in contrast to clicking, whi is a bit off your usual app design). I also didn't know (even though if I would have opened my eyes I could have) that the "any channel" in the short manual for getting through with VLC hast to be the one you are actually intending to watch, but I figured that out soon enough. I don't know what their structure for fees and rights are, but surely there's something out there that can bring the sport of sumo to a larger audience at a reasonable price. I find your statement that the fees are too high to be dubious, given the other content on ESPN3. Surely the budget for the UK Darts Federation(or whatever) cannot be that much higher than that of the Sumo Federation. And I've seen darts on ESPN3. The more insular, paranoid, backwards, and technologically irresponsible the powers that be are, the smaller their audience will be, and the smaller their revenue will be. They are killing their own sport. I'm not sure how it is in Japan, but how many people under 30 actually even watch TV on their TV anymore? In other highly technological countries like the US and Korea, TVs are primarily used by the young for displaying streaming services. They are going backwards, not forwards. And if you tell me that $10/day for sumo coverage is reasonable, I will laugh in your face and ask you what planet you're from.
