I'm pretty sure I actually had that NIJI thing on my system already some years ago (possibly under a slightly different name, but the program looks familiar) before the service went bust shortly after I installed it. Interesting to see it's up again, but for anyone getting their hopes up, these streaming services tend not to last long and/or are quite flaky.

Actually, it works pretty well. Was surprised. Aspect ratio is off, but I'll find a way around that. There are only 7 channels.

Yup, I've installed it again, too...looks much more stable than when I tried it back in 2010 or so.

Good point. I was myopically wondering what his motivation was in favor of advocating for it.

It strikes me that even a pricing structure most of us would find acceptable will still be way too expensive in a country where the average weekly income is only $92.

p.s.... as for a video fix -- I know 3-4 Mongolian TV channels provide live coverage. I'm checking to see if any of the channels are available over the internet -- commentary will be in Mongolian.

Takamisakari - thanks for finding the link. I wasn't able to stay up late during the weekday. Yes, UBS does show the same NHK feed with replays. Also in Mongolia, there is a live radio broadcast and during the Asa days, nearly ever indy-taxi (жолооч) had the matches cranking from their scratchy car speakers.

Which leads to two questions:

1) I remember in the 90's (at least in Aomori) Japan also had a radio broadcast of the matches. Does this still exist? If so, can it be heard via internet? I'd like to watch the UBS feed and listen to the Japanese play-by-play.

OR

2) Is there an English audio-only broadcast? I recall their being an in-house broadcast, or maybe put the audio of the English TV commentary (which I have never heard) out for the world to hear the play-by-play. This should keep the UStream bullies away.

Now to figure out how to get the lower division.....

For me the Mongolian link works with Chrome but not with Explorer.

The Niji is worse quality today, specially the sound. Probably more people watch during week-end.

Hi. Sharing the grief of all the Pirate Party members here, one has to think that this was coming anyway, the situation as was was quite atypical for any sport and. Everyone has to regroup now.

Reason I am posting is that - is the best option for araibira, kintamayama, or other fujis and kazes (and again - thanks for your efforts) not uploading vids to youtube and sharing its link only here on the forum? (i.e. non-members cannot see the link). Is this not a common practice? I am sure IPB has that option (only members can see the link or somesuch). Same on youtube, you can upload 'privately' I believe way back when when a french sumo site had videos it had that principle. This way videos will stay 'undetected' and anyway most of us who would watch those vids are registered here. It would take away the database linking component but hell, better than 120 dollar a day?

The guys uploading need some reward for their work, and the satisfaction of knowing they've reached and been appreciated by as many people as possible would no longer be there, the polls on this forum get entered on average by about 35 members, while i'm sure we're all exceptional people (i'l sadly have to exclude myself from that) it's just not worth doing for that few viewers in my opinion.

I could be entirely wrong of course, just thinking aloud.

NIJI and UBS1 are probably getting overloaded with hits from the ex-Ustream viewers. UBS is handled best using Firefox. IE 8 and IE 11 will not display it in XP, Win 7 or Win 8.1. Chrome usually locks up if you go full screen. Even Firefox was doing occasional temporary freezes tonight.

UBS1 picked up the NHK sumo feed while NHK was still doing the news. It can be a backup for those frustrating times that NHK drops sumo for a breaking political event.

Actually around 10 years ago there was a system named "keyhole tv" which streamed Japanese Tv's (NHK included), but very low quality.

The quality is somewhat improved, but NIJI is better. Other disadvantage is that it is free for only a limited time, whereafter the premium key costs 5 dollars for 30 days.

If the 4:3 aspect ratio bothers you at Niji TV, you can watch the stream inside VLC and set the aspect ratio manually to 16:9.

1. Log into Niji and play one of the available channels.
2. Open VLC, go to Media -> Open Network Stream, and paste the following URL: http://127.0.0.1:8902/tv.mpeg. Click Play. Mute the sound in Niji media player.
3. Adjust the aspect ratio from the 'Video' menu. Barring video jitters, you'll get a picture-perfect feed.

Unfortunately not :-(. I tested Niji just now and the sound is still "orkish". The reason was not the excess interest during the sumo stream but some technical malfunction at Niji.

I just chrecked the link - not only NHK G(eneral) but also NHK's BS1 is listed among the available channels!

This could mean that makushita could also be covered, as the Sumo broadcast on NHK BS1 (102 = sub channel?)

I will definitely try this! but if anyone already knows whether BS 102 can be selected, I appreciate a brief reply here.

This could be another major improvement of live video sumo coverage within just a few days!
