Asashoryu's 25th kinboshi

Recommended Posts

Yes! In the spirit of increased inter-basho discussion, here's another Asashoryu thread. (Enjoyable TV program...) This could have gone into Polls, I guess, but I didn't feel like adding 25 options, 20 of which won't be voted for anyway...

With his Day 3 loss against Aminishiki in Nagoya, Asashoryu has now given up 24 kinboshi in his career. (The DB list includes 4 fusenpai and a DQ loss, which did not award a kinboshi to the winner.) Who do you think will be next and complete the quarter-century mark? Or will he reach an unlikely intai without giving up another one?

Feel free to hijack the thread for discussions about the most or least impressive kinboshi in Asashoryu bouts, or whatever else catches your fancy. (Proverbial apple...)

I see no rikishi who could take a kin-boshi from Asashoryu next basho.

My guess is that it must be a rikishi who excels at Asa's own weapon, i.e. speed. I'd wager on Goeido in Kyushu Basho.

I'll go with Tochinoshin in Aki. You heard it here first. The most impressive (for me) kinboshi against Asashoryu was the one by Dejima.

Edit: busted.

I think the one against Asashouryuu against Dejima against Aminishiki was much better..

The hair pull against Kyokushuzan? You mean he didn't even get the money to fix the car mirror?

I'm guessing he did at least get the kensho money for the bout itself. :-P

I agree with Sokkenaiyama. :-P I think Tochinoshin will take the kinboshi in Aki.

Most impressive kinboshi for me has to be Hokutoriki's in May 2004, considering Asa was on a 35 bout winning streak at the time and Hoku had never beaten a yokozuna before (or since, for that matter).

I don't think Asa will give away a kinboshi in Aki. I'll go for a demoted Kisenosato in Kyushu.

Aminishiki again.

Don't we expect him to be sanyaku in Aki? If so, your promotion assumes it'll occur after he bombs out of komusubi?

Edit: I'll guess Goeido

I remember, someone posted number of kinboshi given away by all the Yokozuna, and Asashoryu wasn't that great in that department. Looks like anyone can get a kinboshi from him nowadays. I would say Kisenosato, Kotoshogiku, Miyabiyama, and Ami are regular threats.

Also, there were some slips against likes of Kokkai, Hoku, Futenho, 10ho.

OTOH, he has 22 yusho already, so correct evaluation might be to devide kinboshi/yusho. I am not sure how he is fairing in this regard. Someone could elaborate such numbers.

Nitpick: 23 yusho.

next joi-jin opponent to beat Asa will be Miyabiyama .. don't know when.

Looking strictly at the joi, no one is really ready to beat him in Aki. Of course anyone can win in a fluke bout (Tamanoshima), or in a prescient bout (Tochinoshin), or if Asashoryu falls off the wagon fast and hard and is forced to retire before Kyushu (Miyabiyama or hypothetically Baruto). But... we have not had any kyujo Ozeki in awhile and it might just be time for that which could thrust a couple more guys into joi position. If that happens, look out for Toyonoshima! If his elbow and confidence are ever back to 100%, he can beat Asashoryu emphatically. Who said speed would be the one to trump Asa? Well, that's Toyonoshima's M.O.

How did he do it last time? I think he blazed from the tachiai to get morozashi and he just smothered the yokozuna right to the edge and out.

Now as for Aminishiki falling out of sanyaku, maybe for Hatsu but not Kyushu. Otherwise he would be the obvious choice. Baruto maybe, but he is still not fast enough or technical enough to get inside the Wily One. And once he can defeat Asa with brawn alone you will see the yokozuna hang it up for good...

But I don;t see a lot of turnover coming out of Sanyaku following Aki. The more I look at it, Toyonoshima has the best prospects of squeezing up into the joi for a giant-killing opportunity, as long as he can survive his Sadogatake test in Aki. So go for it little man!

Despite the fact you'll likely declare me to be crazy, I for one think Asa is going to yusho in Aki.

Not unless he get's himself into a lot better shape than he was in Nagoya. Mainoumi nailed it before the basho started, Asa was "podgy" and his lack of proper keiko showed as well. He is not young and dominant enough to go into a basho and knock everyone out of his way like he did in '04 & '05 anymore. If he wants to yusho in Aki or any other hon-basho again he is going to have to start taking keiko more seriously.

I think in his years as sole yokozuna when he was so overwhemlingly dominant, he got used to being able to coast through a basho and still get the yusho most of the time. Now he's got more competition and isn't in as good shape physically, so he's gonna have to work at it.

He can still do amazing things once in a while, like pulling out a kimarite no one's seen in 30 years. I'm certain he did that, knowing the yusho was already lost, to show he still had it. But now I think he's going to have to start working a lot harder than in past years if he wants to keep up.

I'm going to say & hope that nobody gets the kinboshi in Aki!!

On Senshuraku night at the after party Asashoryu promised me that he was really going to work harder for the yusho in Aki. If you looked in his eyes you could see he wants it.

Now lets see if he means it!!! I do hope he does!!!! In Aki I'm going for an Asashoryu yusho for my pick!!

Now in Kyushu maybe things will change!!

I hope someday they'll join us, and the forum will live as one.
