Not interrupt, delay - like the last Shonosuke had to wait an extra year or so till he got promoted

I honestly thought that was just a hangover from the "We don't need no Shonosuke" decade, which I really don't understand.

Again, maybe it's just the way my western mind works, but I'd love to see gyoji ranked on performance rather than seniority. I would like to see leapfrogging and backsliding in the promotion queue.

It won't, but will it? Do we western fans attach a stigma to sashi-chigae that no longer exists?

I mean, I know the tate-gyoji's wazashi signifies his readiness to commit seppuku if he gets it wrong, but they don't, do they? I've no idea when the last one did that, if they ever did.
The Kyokai always reject the ritual letter of resignation, too.

Maybe I've missed something, but the only thing that seems to interrupt the strict order of seniority gyoji promotions is off-dohyo wrongdoings or leaving in a somewhat premature huff. They leave the promotion queue, but I don't recall one being sent backwards in the queue.

Just for the sake of detail, the blade is a tanto, not a wakizashi. Not that it changes anything and certainly no offence intended, but as Japanese swords are another one of my passions I had one of those moments of being concerned I had entirely misunderstood a gyoji's outfit and so was sidetracked looking into it!

Since I bothered to look it up.

Abi on day 2: "I woke up and felt like walking aimlessly forward and rolling over". That was mukiryoku sumo at its finest. And by mukiryoku, I actually mean the forbidden "Y" word.

Abi is damaged goods this basho. Still recovering from elbow surgery. Wouldn't expect much from him this basho other than lots of henka attempts.

Insane footwork by Hatsuyama to recover his position multiple times against Shimanoumi yesterday (although it was partly on him that he needed to in the first place):

Shimanoumi really thought this was an opportunity to pick up one of the 6 wins he needs to stay in juryo, so he actually tried. (Given recent decisions and whom we've talking about, I guess 5 could do it)

I'm wondering where are all those now who were claiming not so long ago that Kirishima "is finished" that "he is not Sanyaku material" and so on.....

Aonishiki continues to impress. Fastest ever to a Kinboshi, according to the NHK broadcast.

I was theorizing with someone if this would be the case while watching live. If I have my facts straight, he's achieved a kinboshi in 11 basho, beating the previous record jointly held by Tomokaze and Konishiki (14 basho)

That worked out quite well for him didn’t it! Extra ¥ every tournament as long as he is a sekitori.

It could well be his last opportunity, because the kid looks too good to be spending much time outside sanyaku.
And if he keeps doing it like that, I'm probably going to end up liking his submarine style.

Aonishiki is not good, he is great. Not only in technique, but in mind and strength too.

It would be a heck of a thing for him to be promoted to Sekiwake (if stars align) this basho and begin an Ozeki run...in this Makuuchi which is more competetive than it has been in ages.

There are so many fresh Rikishi who are good. Some of them in a cusp of greatness: Onokatsu, Hakuoho, Takerufuji (who I still believe to be the greatest prospect for newest Ozeki run) have all ingredients to be great. Hell, even Kinbozan has the grit to bloom to be a strong Sekiwake regular who may just go into a run.

There are the already tested strong veterans: Kirishima (who is on an Ozeki run), Takayasu, Tamawashi.

Wildcards who can just win and stop your run by doing something crazy like: Ura, Asakoryu and Tobizaru .

The newest rising wonder in: Kusano.

The current Ozeki and of course the reigning Yokozunae.

It just ain't easy to go on an Ozeki run now. It is way harder than it was a year ago.

Right now Takerufuji looks more like turning into another Endo, I'm afraid. I only doubt he will last that long.

Not that bad, surely. I mean, I'm not deluded enough to think he'll ever make ozeki, but he does have a makunouchi yusho and that puts him a few steps above Endo.

(Full credit to Aonishiki, he looks special)

Aonishki displaying his grappling skills, kept Hoshoryu so close he couldn’t generate anything, let alone a throw.

I saw Shimanoumi not managing to win despite multiple chances to do so. Maybe I'm just a pessimist. I was about to call it quits for him, but today he showed he can hang out for another basho...and maybe 20 more...Mercy.

I've said it before and I'l keep saying it. There are no mongolians who made it to ozeki that didn't make it further to yokozuna. There have been 6 already. Ama did it when you'd get laughed at if you thought he would win a single yusho. Kakuryu did it. Hoshoryu did it (and at times like today or yesterday one wonders how). Kirishima is wily enough and if he's recovered from his unexplicable lack of staying power, who's there to deny him? Onosato is one. From the rest....Aonishiki maybe? Not enough. Kiribayama next yokozuna. Book it.

Takerufuji thought that the best way to send a monkey flying was grabbing stubbornly his mawashi. And from the outside. Genius plan.

You should try some introspection and think how did he, of all people, get there in the first place.

What was that quote?
