Natsu 2025 discussion (results)

The ticket lotteries for the Natsu basho have started, today that for the good paying fanclub members (sekiwake&above), only they can get the tamari-seki and s-class masu-seki boxes.

That for the lower ranked paying members starts on the 20th, that for the public on the 26th. So far only for the 4 person masu seat boxes and chair seats, on April 1st the Ticket Pia lottery starts, where the 1-3 and 5-6 person masu seats are available. The few tickets that may have been left till then are sold at the general sale starting April 5th, 10h JST.

Service attached special tickets https://sumo.or.jp/Admission/ticket/May/deals/629/

If you plan to go to the basho, try to reserve tickets as early as possible - the sumo boom has just started.

- for me it is too early to plan a trip, I'll have to skip the Natsu basho again this year

With this the NSK published an appeal not to sell/buy tickets of fanclub members. The only penalty they threaten with is to evict the member from the fanclub https://www.sumo.or.jp/IrohaKyokaiInformation/detail?id=687

- pretty useless measure, since they can join under a variety of different identities. With the boom, scalpers rush to the promising ticket market.

Only one short notice that sales start and then basically no PR at all - no info in how many seconds the possible remaining tickets were sold out.

No tickets for the day are sold.

As far as I can tell, the scalpers are buying the tickets and avoiding the official pia resale channel.
instead, the resale market has moved to yahoo auctions & via.gogo, making them harder to trace.

Wow 180 pounds (35,000 yen) on viagogo for tickets on the very back row.

I've signed up for the official cancellation alerts but I'll be amazed if that comes to anything.

Could someone explain when the scalper problem surfaced? I'm assuming the scalper problem came up during COVID? Back when there were same day tickets they would have acted as a damper, no?

Unfortunately, that has been the case for some time. I was about to say how about getting back to purchasing tickets in person at the stalls but we can have once again people being paid to purchase tickets for scalpers.

There's usually a dedicated "absent rikishi" thread...

The dohyo matsuri will be streamed live again - with still "this time" no rikishi

On the NSK site they skip the "this time" by now, but they haven't changed the text on the YT channel since Corona times

Yeah, Raja said he's the first former maegashira to do it, so it was actually historic.

I like it. It's a great niche that gives him far fewer opportunities to land on his head.

Day 3 Takadagawa joined the confused head shimpan hall of fame: the gyoji had pointed to Shonannoumi, his explanation was: "The gyoji gumbai pointed to Endo, but (the mono-ii was that) he might have been out earlier ... sorry (laughs from the audience), the gyoji gumbai pointed to Shonannoumi, but his foot turned earlier and Endo's body was still in."

After confusion last time, this time a sashi-chigae for Takadagawa: a mono-ii on the bout Ura-Ichiyamamoto, explanation: possibly out at the same time and torinaoshi, but: "Ichiyamamoto was still in, gyoji sashi-chigae, Ichiyamamoto wins" - but Kandayu had pointed to Ichiyamamoto. Takadagawa: I have to apologise to the gyoji.

Hakuoho has taken the tape off his shoulder this basho. Does that signal he means serious business?

Kotozakura stumbling at the first bout. But Oho is not an easy opponent for anyone these days so not an easy start for the ozeki and it definitely shows.

Onosato extra careful at the tachiai. Might have been an opening for Wakamotoharu but the bulldozer was full power today.

Some papers are complaining about Kirishima's dame-oshi against Gounoyama. I didn't notice it, but looking at it now, well, yes.. After a fierce exchange of thrusts, Kirishima got his right hand in and won, but he gave Gounoyama a finishing push outside the tawara, and again after he fell under the dohyo NHK commentator Mainoumi  criticized him, saying, "That's not good." Fellow commentator ex- Kotokaze  was also mad, saying, "Once the match is decided, he needs to leave quickly. Otowayama Oyakata  was there dohyo - side. Kirishima will be in big trouble when he gets back to the heya.."

Hoshoryu to last 15 days , with a winning record.

Onosato to get at least 12.

Kotozakura to not go Kadoban again.

Just watched again, he shoved him in the face after they both stepped off the doyho, causing Gonoyama to fall into the crowd.

I didn't see anything in the bout that should have riled Kirishima up, there was a matta but that was due to the sekiwake taking his time about it.

Wakatakakage. It would be great to see him back as a san'yaku mainstay.

My ideal scenario would be the 14-0 matchup between Hoshoryu and Onosato on the final day with Hoshoryu getting the win. Establishes he's a legit yokozuna to allay some concerns of he masses, and Onosato unreservedly earns promotion.

But I will always take "the yusho that must not be named".

For whatever reason Gonoyama seems to rile up a number of different rikishi...

Not sure why. He's never appeared to be a dirty fighter.
