So farewell then, Kairyu. In makushita for almost 15 years, and usually in the upper half. He had a yusho and a few near misses but just couldn't quite get that priceless promotion.

Sakura retires after 21 years in ozumo, having begun his career with 15 consecutive make-koshi. He went on to reach a highest rank of Jonidan 5. He had a 10-0 record against Moriurara, who is now the last active rikishi from their debut class of May 2003.

Lots of retired rikishi move into the food business in some way, but Sakura's nickname in the sumo world was 'Chanko Yokozuna' because of his skills in the Takadagawa kitchen. I'd be shocked if he doesn't end up running his own place eventually. Anyway, his danpatsu-shiki was held at the heya senshuraku party.

Spoiler

He received several floral gifts after his last bout.

Stablemates make their cuts, Shonannoumi and I think the second is Kagayaki? Kimura Shonosuke in full dress was the gyoji.

Takadagawa-oyakata (former Sekiwake Akinoshima) makes the tomebasami to end the ceremony.

More flowers and a farewell speech from Sakura.

No pictures from the actual haircutting part of Chikureisen's danpatsu-shiki, but here's what I found of the before and after.

Spoiler

Having his first and last oichomage completed.

And the severed oicho.

Otowayama-beya's Hagane was among the guests.

He kept his nameplates (he started under his family name, Omura) as a souvenir.

And a few shots from Yuki's danpatsu-shiki.

Spoiler

At the final Michinoku-beya senshuraku party, Yuki waits for the haircutting to begin. Heya yobidashi Shin holds the tray.

Ozeki Kiribayama says farewell.

And afterwards.

Kirimaru's danpatsu-shiki is apparently scheduled for April 14th.

Finally, they hire again after more than nine years. Glad for the three guys who made it. I always expected long-serving veterans like Shoketsu, Musashiumi or Dairaido to patiently wait for a spot, but it looks like they were not considered (or simply want to perform as active rikishi).

That will boost the number of sewanin up to 11 for a couple of months. Fukuryudake will turn 65 in May - which means we will settle at 10.

My guess is Ryuden, but I am not 100% sure myself.

I expect a lot more outgoing from Miyagino stable and Michinoku stable in the coming days?

My guess is neither Kagayaki nor Ryuden (doesn't look like them at all), but I don't know the guy.

Okinofuji was interviewed by his local paper: he wants to contribute something to his hometown/island. "Not injury, my body didn't move properly anymore." He took an NSK examination and chose the path of sewanin. http://www.sanin-chuo.co.jp/articles/-/551392

- being from the heya of the rijicho likely helped to get the job

I didn't spot it at the time but Takasago-beya announced on March 1st that itto-tokoyama Tokoyumi had retired after almost 47 years in the job. He still had over two years until mandatory retirement.

Kise-beya posted a video of their senshuraku party, showing Mogaminishiki with his first-and-last oichomage (screenshot below). He has found a partner and will be getting married, the shisho announced in his speech. No footage of the danpatsu-shiki unfortunately.

They dedicated a whole video to the event - with interlude

as above with optional additional English subtitle explanations - getting married on March 29th, he introduced his now wife at the party - off video. He'll continue to work for Kise-beya for another year - obviously as chanko-cho: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ll09K95svLU

Kairyu's danpatsu-shiki took place a few days ago at Dewanoumi-beya.

Spoiler

With his last oichomage - he had experience of it before in six Juryo bouts.

OBXznqVR_o.jpg

A commemorative picture with the heya and attendees. The previous Dewanoumi (former Sekiwake Washuyama) and former Juryo Dewahayate are there. A special guest was Aoiyama - he and Kairyu were stablemates in the old Tagonoura-beya, but when the shisho died the rikishi were divided between Dewanoumi and Kasugano.

JaHeYsfn_o.jpg

Aoiyama makes his cut.

5Yjbua9i_o.jpg

Kairyu served as tsukebito to Mitakeumi, who makes his cut.

FgZOiyh7_o.jpg

The shisho (former Maegashira Oginohana) makes the final cut.

j8ZQoYCn_o.jpg

A new suit for the new sewanin - surely somebody could've helped with that tie!

XOCHT1OB_o.jpg

The severed oicho. It's been tidied up so probably he plans to keep it in a display case.

uGtKkL4n_o.jpg

And today Kirimaru's danpatsu-shiki took place at former Michinoku-beya, although like Chikureisen earlier I didn't find any shots of the actual hair cutting. Anyway, here's what did turn up.

Spoiler

Having his first and last oichomage prepared by a tokoyama, probably Tokodai.

PRcp9R6N_o.jpg

ciVY5QwK_o.jpg

KTWX2dQ1_o.jpg

Posing for some commemorative shots in front of the heya. In the last one he is joined by Michinoku-oyakata (former Ozeki Kirishima) and some of the old boys. Directly behind Kirimaru is ex-Jumonji, in front of the pillar box maybe ex-Ryuho?

MKdoowUN_o.jpg

The severed oicho being tidied up, again probably for display case.

qxw1cOZn_o.jpg

And afterwards, with Michinoku.

QVUGNeHW_o.jpg

A souvenir given to those attending, although I don't know what it is or if there's anything in it.

Together with Terutsuyoshi retired (same official basho) and on the same day the danpatsushiki: Keitenkai had his today in a hotel on Tokyo, with about 120 cutters, the Saitama Sakae kohai ozeki Kotozakura and Takakeisho among them. http://www.sankei.com/article/20240623-KHTFKIOE2ZO2XNTZS63GHQJWGQ/

Final cut by Onomatsu oyakata
