New ozeki Kirishima

Well he didn't get a pocket square which is the real party foul here

Also, unless the lower rankers have been paying tribute to the oyakata's former shikona this whole time, looks like they got some snappy new yukata as well to celebrate the promotion (so I can imagine they've been preparing the name/fabric for such a moment for a while? That's an impressive turnaround time if not). Looks good, disco vibes. I'd wear it around the house for sure. Not sure if I'm bold enough to do it in Ryogoku.

While I wasn't anticipating the shikona change, it doesn't surprise me. So long, Misty Horse Mountain...

I've a feeling Kirishima II will out-perform Kirishima I. The trajectory he's currently on is rope-ward.

I think it's not that bad. Kirishima I arguably peaked at ōzeki quite late in his career

No need for the "arguably" there - it took him 91 career tournaments to make it, which at the time was the slowest ever and I presume still is.

haha, that's a fun touch. I'm starting to really enjoy these kanji selections for shikona. Especially when they they play with the pronunciation to make them read as names we've heard before.

If you're counting by tournaments, no doubt.  No one else in the 6 basho era has 14 years or more, while he has 15.  But some pre-6-basho-era guys had a longer length of time, such as http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=3855 and http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=3736.

Note I didn't check those who topped out at Yokozuna, but I don't think that's necessary.

I have a feeling that Kirishima will be a competent and stable ozeki, moreso than the recent crop of incumbents. Mitakeumi and Shodai weren't up to par, and even Takakeisho has bounced back and forth between good results and kadoban. Will be nice with some consistency in the rank.

No one gets promoted to ozeki without being "up to par". Mitakeumi in particular was an ultra-reliable KK machine until one basho after his promotion. I don't know whether injury or long-covid caused the subsequent six straight MKs, but it definitely wasn't bad judgement on the part of the promotion committee.

Possibly both.  He showed some spark this basho, suggesting that he may be back to at least mid-to-upper Maegashira level in the future.  The main question: fight while injured to soften the fall, or bite the bullet (Wakatakakage) and hope to rocket back up while healthy.

Mitakeumi doesn’t show the focus required to bite the bullet and work his way back up, plus he never wrestled below Makushita.

Just an observation

IIRC in May 2022 he injured a shoulder/arm and coincidentally or not that was when the switch on his sumo got turned off. It was great to see some fire in his sumo this time round for the first time since then.

No memo, he had nothing to do with the acceptance ceremony, only the participants should be dressed formally.

Tatsutayama and all of the urakata are in their salaryman suits here.

Still Tetsuo 鐡力, different second kanji (お for 力 is definitely an interpretative reading)

A missed chance; he should have chosen the given name "Hare".  Boy that would get international notice.

Kirishima at Narita airport today, leaving for Mongolia, last as new juryo in 2019. He couldn't get a ticket in business class or above and has to fly economy class.

Kirishima today took part in the Dornod aimag naadam festivities specially held to celebrate his ozeki promotion

not in the horse race and Mongol-zumo parts - there he only watched

and he (and his wife) received a horse (and likely the foal) from the Dornod aimag locals http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202306100000053.html

Kirishima returned today after refreshing 10 days in Mongolia. He wants to restart keiko tomorrow and speed up towards Nagoya. The usual place for him to train is Arashio-beya, degeiko is now to Nagano: he plans to join the Arashio-beya camp in Shimosuwa and train with Wakamotoharu - and others.
