A shame after such a career - which outlasted many notable people younger than him - could be relied upon to perform in makuuchi (regularly near the top) for so long. A true stalwart.

I hope there's solace in the fact that his decline went so slowly that everyone, himself included, must've prepared mentally for the end.

So I guess he's immediately assuming his Kimigahama kabu, which was freed up in October.

EDIT: his career at the top was so long that, in fact, he had loaned out his kabu to someone 6 years his junior. Two years ago.

Wow, one of the absolute best, most entertaining rikishi. God bless him and I hope his second career is just as successful.

I had an inkling this might happen when I saw the yobidashi show his kyujo banner on the dohyo today.

He was a solid, dependable journeyman of a rikishi for a long time, and I respect him even more for having decided not to drop to juryo.

Best of luck, Kimigahama-san.

Another one of the old guard has left. I was not quite a fan, more like indifferent but still big respect for a long career in Makuuchi. Not many of his peers left now anymore.

I noticed earlier that he was approaching 50% W-L for his career.  He ends up 674-675-33; I wonder if he was aware of that.  Did he retire after day 5 and forget that the fusenpai would be added on?

I forgot he was a long-time (if I'm not mistaken) assistant for Hakuho's dohyo-iri ceremonies. Thanks @Akinomaki for the photo reminder!

He told the mayor on the 30th that he wants to have his last bout in the Oki traditional style. The winner of a bout there has to give the win away in a 2nd bout. They throw massive amounts of salt at these events, towards the rikishi.

Today Kimigahama did PR at the basho for his danpatsushiki. The final bout in Oki style, in collaboration with the locals: having salt getting thrown from the tamari-seki. He charters a plane to bring about 120 of his local supporters to the event and also invites about 40 kids from local sumo dojo.

What's the point of a 2nd bout if you are going to lose on purpose? Doesn't make for a great entertainment.

Not everything is about entertainment.  Is a catholic mass entertaining?  Some rituals exist for other reasons, and I would posit that this is one of them.

I don't know about that. Jungyo audiences seem well entertained by the nothing-at-stake demo bouts.

In hitori-zumo, Ichirikizan always wins one of the first 2 and then has to lose the decisive 3rd to the rice spirit to ensure a good harvest. Oki-zumo certainly has some meaning like this behind it, courtesy to the opponent I guess and pleasing the spirits. We'll likely get told more about it when the danpatsushiki comes.
