Shodai becoming kadoban was the best thing about this basho for me. I am glad that they take lower ranked contenders seriously enough at the moment, but that means they have to break up a number of intra-sanyaku matches. (We've also lost Mitakeumi - Takanosho). The fact that Shodai's matches get sidelined because he's not performing well enough in the first week, and then gets easier opponents to lift him to eight wins was becoming very irritating.

He has the ability and is excellent when he's on, just needs to be more consistent. I noticed a bit more aggression from him this basho, which was good - blasting out Abi was especially nice. I feel like a lot of his losses come when he's too passive while searching for a technique to execute. Now if only Oho had been able to finish this tournament stronger and respark the rivalry between them coming up..... As skilled as Kotonowaka is, and despite also being a youngster with a great sumo pedigree, I find something incredibly bland about him. I'm hoping Kitanowaka takes off and gets in the GenZ rikishi mix soon. Edited January 21, 2022 by Katooshu
dada78641 884 Posted January 21, 2022 (edited) I realize there's no one besides myself who really cares about my own fictional Bento Award for who gets flung the furthest away from the dohyo (to go get bento), but I appreciate this nice little sprint from Yutakayama after losing his bout with Ura on day 12. Thorbjarn 215 Posted January 21, 2022 This Basho is amazing. So many lively bouts, so much action. Mitakeumi had to bad losses, but came back with good wins each time. Terunofuji looks banged up, but managed a good win nonetheless. Abi is still threatening. We'll see how this goes. Gods bless the font day, btw.

The u is usually silent in Japanese, so I will from now on call him Terf, a good followup to Hak. Interesting, that torikumi list is a good exercise for shikona guessing
WAKATAKE 2,676 Posted January 21, 2022 It never ceases to amaze me of the calls that Konosuke is able to make and get them right. I really hope we see him as Kimura Shonosuke in the future

Absolutely. And while I agree with the decision to match up the yusho contenders in the final days, they could easily have foreseen this and had Shodai face Terunofuji earlier. In a way it would be a rebuke for Shodai - you’re not putting in an Ozeki performance so you don’t get to fight on senshuraku

At his position he has no margin for error - he needs that 8th win to save himself a return trip to Juryo. Hope he can manage it. Incidentally, that's Ishiura's second shitatehineri this basho. That makes him the first man since ... himself in March 2017 to use it twice in one tournament. Satoyama in March 2014 was the last non-Ishiura to double up on that kimarite in Makuuchi. Ishiura thoroughly deserves the technique prize

It was well-deserved last basho, but his sumo has been a bit ugly, all over the place, and somewhat kitchen-sinky this basho. While the concussion can't have helped, his sumo has looked more like Tobizaru than Terutsuyoshi. Entertaining, maybe, but not grounds for a ginosho. Hoshoryu is a much more deserving second candidate for the ginosho behind Ishiura (second time, if so) with a lot more memorable bouts. Abi might even get the ginosho himself since it can also be awarded for skilful use of a technique or style, and one could say he and Takakeisho have gotten oshi-sumo refined to an art now. Katooshu 3,335 Posted January 21, 2022 (edited) Myogiru having 6 ginosho but no other sansho is rather unusual. If it is technique based, they really loved his, especially in 2012. Edited January 21, 2022 by Katooshu

This will be for the yusho and Mitakeumi’s promotion consideration. will current ozekis problem be discussed by YDC? Assuming Mitakeumi is 12-2 at that time, I don't think he has to beat Terunofuji to gain Ozeki. After all, Terunofuji himself didn't have to beat Hakuho to become Yokozuna. And in the bargain-basement world of kadoban Ozeki, Mitakeumi would already look pretty reliable at 32 wins.

Compare to his 1st run at Makuuchi division, Ura's current sumo style is almost orthodox. Back then, he was like a headless chicken running around and bumping into walls. It was fun but most of us knew he would be injured eventually. Mitakeumi is 87.672% there to get his Ozeki promotion. 3

Hankegami 537 Posted January 22, 2022 It seems we have yet another "week 2" rikishi. Oho 2 is currently ruining what Oho 1 was able to build up during last week. I was obnoxiously sure that Oho would have run over poor overbeaten, MK Akua today to get his KK. Conversely, Akua won and now 7-7 M18e Oho is going to put his staying in Maakuchi on the line tomorrow. Wow.
