Hakuho retires

Recommended Posts

Kimigayo is a beautiful anthem, and can be very rousing in a choral-orchestral form. But I can't help but feel dissapointed by GACKT's spiritless rendition of it. Compare that to the roaring performance by Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar that followed. Maybe I'm overthinking.. but was this done by design on someone's part? I wonder.... :-)

ZakZak comments on Hakuho's plans to recruit top amateur rikishi http://www.zakzak.co.jp/article/20230130-B4YDOVITSNNGJHDYREOLYF5AJ4/

The 2 from Tottori Johoku and now Dōshisha University who fought Hakuho are both called new hopes who aim for ozumo

Hakuhō's final sumo, versus:

  1. Mahatō (eldest son)
  2. Batjargal Munk- (can't make this out, nephew)
  3. Usukhbayar Demidjants (notable amateur sumo wrestler featured in our ams section, teammate of Hakuhō's nephew, and son of a famous bokh who was featured in the photos (brown robed guy?) when Hakuhō went back to Mongolia to promote his danpatsu)

Mönkh-idere (?) - Tottori Jōhoku alum, currently studying at Dōshisha University and a member of their sumō club

Couple of threads from the university sports publication's Twitter account listing him in tournament results - from what I can tell, Demidejamts is their top wrestler

Hakuho apparently reserves the foreigner's spot for 193cm tall Demidjants, who is now 4th year and should soon start the kenshu period at the heya. The nephew is 3rd year and in Japan since middle school, seems he'll get the 10 years in Japan in time to join with a Japanese shusshin, to follow the path of Hokuseiho and join the heya of his uncle  - definitely Miyagino-beya becomes Mongol-beya, like expected in the tabloids. Some oyakata is cited for those 2 and he tells that Hakuho also tries to get Nakamura - other heya frown upon this prospect of Miyagino dominance.

I'm taking a class on management right now. Reminds me of management incompetence, inflexibility, lack of data analysis just to name a few. But we've known this for a long time. How about adapting to new ways to build up stronger wrestlers to combat the incoming Miyagino dynasty?

Find the 2nd tier and train them well -> Isegahama.

Someone posted a video on YT of the last 30 minutes of the hair cutting ceremony. The children have really grown! The youngest daughter did real well on her speech.

It was great to see ex-Takamiyama take a turn with the scissors. In another YT video, ex-Daikiho was just crying his heart out. (Brokenheart...)

The two eldest daughters will tower over their mother.

Anyone interested in transcribing Hakuho’s commentary from the show?

Videos getting added all the time to the channels I already posted, the Sumo Channel still has no playlist for Hakuho, but the most detailed coverage, including all torikumi and dohyo-iri

Today someone posted a 98min digest video of the whole event

Man wouldn't you wonder what they say to the retiree after the snip (well the short ones are just standard omedetou etc probably). I almost cried when it's Harumafuji. :'-(

Here is an article in the Asahi Shimbun dated Jan 29, 2023 that quoted Harumafuji as whispering to Hakuho after he snipped, "I am proud to have fought on the same dohyo as you."  It was at that point that Hakuho could not hold back his tears.  At the time, I didn't know what Harumafuji had said.  I just knew that I couldn't hold back my tears, either.

The article goes on to say that later, after the ceremony was finished, Hakuho was quoted as saying, "While I feel refreshed, I am also sad because it feels as though a part of my body is gone."

That's awesome, thank you! *starts crying again*

BTW, I haven't seen his photo with the new haircut anywhere, probably I just missed it?

There's a good one on page 18 of this thread by Kinta.  Dated 1-28, several photos of Hakuho, the first one being Hakuho crying.  Scroll down til you see the pic of Hakuho's wife adjusting his tie.  This is towards the bottom of page 18.

He actually looks very good here, and somewhat reminiscent of those old photos of celebrities from the 60s. If the photo was made black and white and a bit grainy, it could even pass for something from that era.

I was an event to make big money - a commemorative daruma was on sale for about 5 million, 1 million yen was the minimum expected for a cut

2302081748_1.jpg

with more pics: http://www.dailyshincho.jp/article/2023/02111057/?all=1

Kisenosato had about the same number of cutters, Hakuho had exactly 283, but only about 900 at the party, both parts were about thrice as expensive for the Hakuho event.

The weekly taishu tabloid estimates that Araiso earned a profit of around 150 million yen with his danpatsu-shiki event. The kokugikan was packed with about 11 000 spectators - that should have been enough to pay for all events of the day. The party was at the Prince Hotel Shintakanawa. with admission fee of 30 000 yen - and over 1500 attended = 45 million. To have a cut, a congratulatory gift of at least 300 000yen had been asked for. A bit over 280 had one (about 300 were reported), so we have 100 million for sure - many of the really rich tanimachi surely gave a much bigger sum.

Not only the Hakuho cup today, Hakuho was on NTV's Sunday push sports (not live) with a close to 1 hour (CMs all the time included) special about the danpatsushiki and the month before, showing the menu at the party and the present everyone there received. It may be difficult to find a full video of this, that program is seldom available. Short clips from NTV:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCgZTYXEdoY

and then he was on gyoretsu dekiru sodanjo 行列のできる相談所 on the same channel, together with his wife, recorded the day after the danpatsushiki, like apparently also the other program, with videos from the month before as well https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8i7wqn

Proper VOD: https://tver.jp/episodes/epsqd12vui

He must be gutted how much younger moto-Shohozan's haircut made him look then.

Congrats, and well deserved.  Also, don't feel like you have some hinkaku to preserve now that you're an Ozeki.  On SumoForum, even a Shodai-like performance sustained long enough will make you a Yokozuna(Crowned...).

I can attest to that.  I keep getting promoted for no reason other than my many mediocre posts.  Not that you were promoted for the same reason, RabidJohn!  Congratulations!!
