Hakuho retires

The trouble with the word xenophobia is too many people automatically conflate it with racism. Sign of the times, I suppose, but it's really a spectrum with racism at one extreme and the kind of harmless nationalism represented by supporting a national sports team at the other. (And if you're thinking "but that's not irrational so it can't be a phobia", let me assure you that the hopes and expectations of the average English football fan during any major tournament are hopelessly irrational.)

It's possible to have such an intense nationalism that you believe everyone who's not your countryman is no good.  My favorite novel is Islandia, a fantasy about a nation/society living on a small continent in the Southern Hemisphere.  They argue that they aren't racist because a) they don't think any ethnic group is inherently any worse than the others; b) they don't want anybody else coming to live in their country.

The real problem with the word xenophobia is the -phobia part, which has been misused on purpose for decades now. [and that's all I'm going to say about that](Sigh...).

A shame that we won't get to see a Hakuho-Terunofuji yokozuna rivalry, however brief, especially as we were robbed through injury of a Hakuho-Kisenosato yokozuna rivalry as well.

With Hakuho towing the line, and nobody getting busted for drugs, or for violating covid rules at hostess bars, or random Olympic speculation...the gap between basho feels longer than ever.

I already miss the yokozuna and his wacky antics.

It was around this point in August that someone started a discussion on trans athletes it sumo.  The boredom is getting worse but we haven't plumbed those depths this time around.

In for work: the course for NSK members about drugs and SNS at the kokugikan, in a proper suit (unlike Goeido in the back)

In before someone makes any grumblings about Hakuho's "extravagant" dress sense..... (Laughing...)

He maintains the "hand over button" stance of oversized gentlemen who aren't quite confident in the integrity of their suitings. Otherwise it's 10/10 from this style guru. Love that tie!

He looks very spiffy.

Notice the classy little Louis Vuitton bag he's carrying (more visible in last photo).  I can't figure out how he is supposed to tell the time on that watch!!

Well, the little hand points to the hour, and the big hand points to the minutes...

I'm serious about that watch.  If you magnify the first picture as much as possible, you will see that the face of the watch is covered by some weird design.  No matter if it has hands or is LED, I don't see how he could read it.  The design looks like tentacles!

It looks like one of Richard Mille's watches although it is a bit too blurry.

Cool tie. Looking forward to seeing Hakuho in his winter attire, especially what his scarf choices would be.

Here's the reason for my disappointment: It's easily scarf season already for my liking. There should already be extravagant scarfs or weird hats. That man simply looks sharp. =(

It does indeed look like a Richard Mille and I'm disappointed. That's a vulgar, flashy option which tells the world "I have lots of money and no taste". Much beloved of r'n'b stars, soccer players and others with more money than sense. If you go for a vintage Rolex or Patek Philippe you still have more money that sense but at you will at least look like you have a modicum of class.

There's probably a no-scarf clause on that document they made him sign...

If it helps to take away some of the wank factor, I checked with one of his mates and apparently the watch was a gift from a rich sponsor. Sekitori don't need cash or pockets when their sponsors take them out. Hoshihikari said "That's a good thing .The worst thing is when sponsors give us the leftover food that we never left"
