TV Japan no longer on Dish Network

I relied on it for my basho coverage and as of April 1, have now lost access. I assume Dish Network's contract with TV Japan had expired.  Not surprisingly, DirecTV has now become the satellite provider for TV Japan. I just dropped TV Japan from my Dish programming and I’ll probably end up getting rid of Dish Network entirely. My choices for continuing to watch sumo via NHK brodcasts from TV Japan are my local cable company which is notorious for its poor service, DirecTV, or Uverse.  I was wondering if anyone watches broadcasts of the bashos via TV Japan on Uverse. If you do, what do you think of the service? Is the English language commentary easily accessible?

i just posted a similar message u dear the upcoming basho topic.  Glad you are covering some ground as well, as WE NEEDTO FIND OUT HOW TO WATCH SUMO.

We have used TV Japan since the late 1990’s, as it was always there.  Not sure what  to do now.

Yes, but it's not live and is minus all the excellent 3 minute rites between bouts and the 5 o'clock news. Shame.

Does your sumo viewing have to be on TV? How about online streaming options like some people here do? There's Abema TV. You have to install a VPN plug-in though. Hola worked for me with Chrome.

All of the Japanese channels streamed on Konan sports have now disappeared too.  The Sherming sites remain dead.

Living in rural Illinois, I am not familiar with the streaming options.  Is this something you could perhaps refer me to a site that explains how it works in non technical terms? Another consideration, sadly, is band width. Our satellite internet provider charges $10.00 per Gig for every Gig over 15 used in a month.  I THOUGHT that was a HUGE amount. But my wife burns through it regularly by simply looking at videos of people's dogs on Facebook, etc. .  So if it takes 10 GB of data to watch the basho, it would cost us $100.00 .  A lot of money for retired/disabled couple paying American pharmaceutical prices for their medicines.

There are (were) several sites that provide live streaming of the honbasho matches.  One of the primary sources (Konan) seems to have lost its connection to the Japanese TV channels in the last few days.  Here are some of the forum topics related to the available streams.

General info.

Basho specific.  This topic usually gets started a few days before each basho.

Abema.  This provides free coverage for ALL of the divisions, but is normally only available in Japan.  The topic provides several options for the use of a VPN to trick the internet into treating your computer as one linked to a Japanese server.

Streaming has very recently entered another state of flux.  Look for current status info to appear in the week before the May basho.

Maybe also get a better deal on your internet if one is available. Preferably an unlimited plan. Those are cheap now with reasonable speeds. Hopefully, there's one available in your area.

There almost certainly isn't, or they'd probably already be using it.  Internet in rural areas is getting better, but the US is absolutely huge and there's plenty of places where there aren't any good options.

Even if you do get a good bandwidth internet provider their is no real competition. Which means the cost is not cheap. Cheaper than $100.00 a month though.....

Strange.  I have acquaintances in Los Angeles (Palos Verdes) who get NHK live off the normal broadcast antenna (channel 28.3 or 28.4).  Have you checked that?

What do you mean by "normal broadcast antenna"? Is it terrestrial or satellite service? And is it NHK G?

Terrestrial. In the USA, we have digital TV. All you need is an antenna. Some cities, with large Japanese populations, will broadcast Japanese TV on a digital channel. Alas, not in Green Bay.

I just learned that NHK World TV is seen on channel 28.4, a sub channel of KCET (28.1) in Los Angeles. I never even knew it existed. There is some basho coverage, but it's not clear what that coverage is. I'll wait until the basho draws near so I can check the schedule. From what I understand so far, that coverage probably consists of a daily highlight show--not as good as watching the basho live on TV Japan, but far better than no sumo on TV at all. Also,  NHK World TV is free while TV Japan costs $25.00 a month.

Both NHK World TV and NHK World Radio Japan are also available as free apps for both smartphones and tablets. I will definitely get them for my iPad.

That makes sense.  I was told that it was NHK with very interesting programming, and that sumo was included in the programs.  It is rather NHK World, and the sumo may be the daily digests.

Yes, NHK World shows 23 minute highlights each day, about 7 and a half hours after the live event finishes, it's an FTA channel and available on many satellites. The good news is they showed the last 50 minutes live on day 1 of the Haru Basho, maybe they'll cover more as time goes by.

I have switched to other options for watching Japan TV channel live. It seems FUJITV Live is another choice. I did a free trial and it is not bad. I plan to make a subscription with one month. Hope that it is a good choice.  I live in USA and really a little bit hard to find something available to watch Japan TV.

At least 7 Japanese TV channels (including NHK-G) are viewable on Konan Sports.  Use the clicks below the video display to select the channel you want to watch.  The channels can be bookmarked separately, and, for some, a direct link to the source can be found by cursoring to the upper right corner of the video display.  Konan and the source have several  screen viewing options.
