Abema TV all sumo live

It's definitely a different atmosphere in Abema TV compared to NHK's regular coverage. A lot of gimmicky things going around. Like Moti-san said, it's quite the circus in there.

I wouldn't really mind all that if the quality were good enough though.

It's passable for me but yeah, I've seen better. I'm quite easy to please so there's that too. They say the key to happiness in life is lowered expectations so really lowering the bar when it comes to these things. Hehe.

Just happy there are alternatives other than what we are used to in case those would not be available like apparently today.

Is this working? the last 2 nights I get nothing even with 2 different VPNs.

From Hungary, using chrome and Hola, it's working fine (disconnects after 30 min, but refresh solves it)

I get the same error message as before: "You're browser is not suitable, get Chrome" - but now it really won't work anymore with Firefox

Same, I then got a VPN with Chrome and that din't work either. I wonder if they blocked the IPs for the free VPNs?

Strangely enough, it suddenly works with Opera (it didn't in January), even though I also still get that warning message.

Firefox here, and it works with VPN, too. Just check, if your free VPN routes you through more than one country, in that case, it only works, if Japan is shown as your IP location on IP check sites. https://ip8.com/ shows you both, all the countries if there are more than one, and the geolocation of your IP. Hoxx worked for me initially, but now it always shows the US as my location, so I switched to a paid VPN provider, which works flawlessly.

Demon Kakka in the house for Abema - I guess they're foregoing the "guest who knows nothing about sumo" shtick today.

Abema will again have an extra sumo channel during the basho. It isn't active yet on the location from last time ( https://abema.tv/now-on-air/sumo - the days before last basho it showed interviews with rikishi), but the schedule for day 1 lists it for the first jonokuchi till juryo part: https://abema.tv/channels/sumo/slots/E86QRztRhs1Jm5

All programs for the basho are already on the Abema schedule - 75 in all, 5 per day: makuuchi as part 2, both also on the sports channel, plus a digest on the news channel. You'll find them with https://abema.tv/search?q=大相撲 - on the top the upcoming programs, below the short videos and below that the VODs of complete programs (none yet - only 1 month available), each with a green "もっとみる" button to show more.

And of course: if you are not in Japan, you need a VPN or proxy to watch.

Abema really turned awful this basho: already jonokuchi full of annoying CMs (and louder BGM) - the most annoying that for the basho itself: Takayasu non-stop to yokozuna run and will Kisenosato make a revival?

The least I expected was a stable and better video stream than in Germany - but apparently it is simply bad for the PC everywhere.

Good part: gyoji and yobidashi information also for the lowest division, but it seems they now switched to have the announcers to be sumo beginners - will the guests later on all be experts then?

What I see is okay, a stable stream over VPN, but the two presenters are just awful. A guy talking nonstop and a girl with the voice of my 5 year old niece and an extremely limited vocabulary (Hai, Sugoi, Eeeeeee).

There are a few changes I noticed in the Abema TV sumo coverage. The background music is looooouuuuddd! I swear I heard Drake there one time and even a "DJ KHALED!" poppin'. The girl commentator did sound as if she's 5 years old. A bit annoying with her frequent "Oh my gahd!" exclamations but this is nothing new as we know from the previous basho.

The intro animation graphic for the selected rikishi who Abema TV deemed worthy to have one was still the same as from last basho but they did changed the graphic for when they show certain wrestler's stats (the one with the five-point wheel graph). I guess it looks a bit nicer than the ones during the previous basho. I only manage to catch the 2nd half of the program so I did not get to see if there were new wrestlers that got their own intro graphic packages aside from Hakuho. It'll be fun to hunt them down in the next few days.

Here are some screenshots that I managed to get of the Abema TV 2018 May (Natsu) basho for Day 1 coverage.

Abema TV coverage has a lot of close up shots of Takanohana today. Hearing a lot of talk about Takanohana from the commentator as well. If only I can understand Japanese...

I remember last basho that Abema TV had a video on demand (VOD) for their sumo coverage. Do they still have those? I can't seem to find it on their sumo page. Anybody know the link it there is one?

EDIT: Nevermind... I think I found it.

Anyone managed to get the Abema app to work outside of Japan? I've grabbed and installed the .apk outside the Play Store, and I'm running the same VPN on my phone that allows me to watch Abema on my notebook, but the app errors on me anyway. Additional region check beyond the IP address maybe?

(Watching Abema through the website works on the phone if I force Chrome to request the desktop version of their website, so this query is more for curiosity's sake than actual need.)

Same here, been trying on an Android box with no luck. Maybe if you set up VPN for your router but it would only work at home.

Abema has again sumo on a special sumo channel that's not yet on air and on the sports channel, plus a digest on the news channel and on the Abema Gold channel. https://abema.tv/search?q=大相撲

I doubt that it will be view-able without VPN this time, though the sports channel link to day 1 lists it as world sports https://abema.tv/channels/world-sports/slots/BGRtmAUMPqkaZd

New is that they split it into 4 parts now: jonokuchi till makushita, juryo, makuuchi and climax-makuuchi

Abema was doing all 6 basho for free in 2018, right? Then it will presumably switch to a pay service?

If it can continue to attract enough advertisers, it would not have to become a subscription service.

Then I wish Dr. Takasu continued success in his endeavors.

Pretty sure they've only contracted for one year, so the alternative to continuing as-is would be that the streamed broadcast has to move elsewhere again.
