Akinomaki 39,933 Posted January 8, 2018 (edited) The link for shonichi (day 1) has been published - I don't like the comment which implies that it is not meant for delayed viewing - hopefully a link for that will appear elsewhere. https://abema.tv/channels/world-sports/slots/8W8CNEEd69AjxT Watching outside of Japan is only possible by setting your browser to a Japanese proxy or with a VPN for that purpose. The discussion so far was in the Kyushu stream thread, starting with this: On 04/01/2018 at 09:47, Kintamayama said: Abema TV is going to stream sumo live the next 6 bashos. For free. For free. It will be the first time in 1500 years that someone streams the entire bouts for free. Women commentators and all kinds of special stuff awaits, they say. All three Yokozunae voiced their extreme glee at this news. I think we are very happy too. "We want to bring sumo to new young viewers. It's going to be different from what you have seen till now. We are targeting men and women of all ages. Our aim is to allow anyone anywhere to enjoy a sumo broadcast for free. We promise a dynamic, upbeat broadcast!" they promise. No link yet, but it should be forthcoming. Edited January 9, 2019 by Akinomaki

Akinomaki 39,933 Posted January 8, 2018 (edited) The above link was only for makuuchi, jonokuchi till juryo is at: https://abema.tv/channels/world-sports/slots/8WFadN4vTcNCJb Apparently each day the same links, so no delayed viewing Edited January 8, 2018 by Akinomaki

I was actually thinking of upgrading my VPN subscription for this. MwaaaaaaaaAAAAAHH! Edited January 8, 2018 by orandashoho
UncleMoustache 41 Posted January 9, 2018 Well, at least we have Kintamayama, and that's no bad thing. Hopefully he'll be able to do them all.

Asashosakari 18,868 Posted January 9, 2018 Well, I'm probably out as far as cutting matches goes, if Abema will only do live broadcasts and needs the proxy to be on all the time rather than just to start the playback.
Akinomaki 39,933 Posted January 11, 2018 Abema TV has now published separate links for each day, and the note that it is not meant for delayed viewing has disappeared - so it looks a bit more promising https://abema.tv/search/future?q=大相撲
Akinomaki 39,933 Posted January 11, 2018 (edited) I'm presently looking for (free) VPN options, so far I got this far: the free option of "hide me" didn't include Japan, I removed that again at once. Golden frog has 3 days of trial, I may use that during the basho The free VPN client of Tsukuba university http://www.vpngate.net/en/#LIST works to show at least a very bad quality of Abema, but stable - better than searching for a proxy each time. On the PC, no quality settings for Abema are available, only in mobile apps. Edited January 11, 2018 by Akinomaki

The Abema FAQ says there are no such settings for the PC - after reading that I posted the info - I still hadn't given up on finding some hidden feature. Gurowake 3,942 Posted January 11, 2018 I "love" it when companies put more effort into making things work on mobile devices than on desktops. So long as something *can* run on a mobile device, it seems that developers think that no one will ever want to run it on a PC. 1
Benevolance 2,479 Posted January 12, 2018 To be fair, I think that almost everyone in Japan has a mobile device, whereas many do not have PCs at home. At least, this is my anecdotal assertion, based on how busy the internet cafes are and how many people wander around taking pictures on phones.

Tenshinhan 1,599 Posted January 14, 2018 I downloaded "Hola - Free VPN" and the AbemaTV stream works fine for me now. Even with Japanese commentary in the low divisions. The quality also seems quite good but there are sometimes short commercial clips between the bouts.
bettega 429 Posted January 14, 2018 I'm watching here using some random VPN plugin in Firefox (there are lots of them - I'm using Hoxx VPN). It's Jonidan right now - super proud of myself finding the bout in SumoDB only by ear. The quality seems worst now with about 7.2k viewers
Asashosakari 18,868 Posted January 14, 2018 The commentators appear to be the same that did the Sponavi coverage...spotted one in jonidan when he was on camera, and I'm currently hearing another distinctive one in sandanme.

Akinomaki 39,933 Posted January 14, 2018 (edited) The Tsukuba Univ. VPN client works fine for me, with about 480p quality, stopping here and then for 10-20s, and also a switch to less quality sometimes. In a few minutes the switch to the makuuchi link gets necessary - let's hope this link then provides a VOD. Surely full of CMs as well - this now may go on for many minutes. Akinomaki 39,933 Posted January 14, 2018 (edited) Abema switches the TV stream by itself - the old link is now at older programs and has VOD: the best thing is the preview window for video positioning that really shows the scene - apparently also when the VPN is already turned off. Rocks 1,807 Posted January 14, 2018 The Hoxx VPN is working great and I was loving it till Makuuchi. There are having 2 commercials after every Makucchi match. Ridiculous.
