If your VPN doesn't work try Smart DNS proxy, they offer a 14 day free trial.

New is that they split it into 4 parts now: jonokuchi till makushita, juryo, makuuchi and climax-makuuchi

Makuuchi climax are the sanyaku bouts  - and now also the videos on the Abema YT channel are only view-able in Japan.

Updates on some of the graphics packages of selected wrestlers.

Takayasu - https://photos.app.goo.gl/vi79637JuoTJP0ne2

Ishiura - https://photos.app.goo.gl/f7GMfDr8C0GDaMyw1

And for those of you who watch Abema TV live sumo often, What does the button/graphics that appear near the lower right side of the screen sometimes during advertisements or matches? Any idea what it does/say/mean? I just keep pressing it as I'm scared if I don't, the streaming would stop. Haha.

^It says “get notifications for this program” or something like that. Maybe get notified when it goes on or something. Probably nothing you care about.

I've had occasional trouble with it, too, though I'm getting a "no internet connection" response. I found after I connect, I have to wait several minutes before attempting to connect to abema. Once or twice I've gotten what appears to be a refusal from Abema - I just switched the server I was connected to. There are lots and lots to choose from.

I use TunnelBear and can connect, but the page freezes up and needs to be reopened very often, which makes for sessions without any continuity which is very annoying.

You just need to choose between Japanese servers JP15-JP35

Looks like Abema's sumo videos are now only viewable for free for one week? Just tried to look up something from Day 3 and ran into "you can watch this for 23 more days with the premium plan", so the total viewing period of 30 days is still there, but...

Let's see what the free one-month premium trial looks like. ¥960 per month apparently once it has to be paid.

Edit: It's not accepting either of my two credit cards, so I guess that's that. :-S

Abema will have sumo on a special sumo channel that's not yet on air and on the sports channel, plus a digest (with repeats), that is also on the news channel.

Again split into 4 parts: jonokuchi till makushita, juryo, makuuchi and climax-makuuchi: the sanyaku bouts

https://abema.tv/search?q=大相撲

The もっとみる green button below shows more of each category: Top the scheduled programs 放送予定, then the videos ビデオ, then the VODs of full programs (without CMs) 過去の放送 of the last week (none so far).

AbemaTimes has a sumo category http://abematimes.com/posts/categories/1018093

with plenty of articles about the basho on Abema, in Japanese of course, often with nice pics, during the basho mostly with screen shots.

It looks like Abema won't continue next year: except for the makuuchi broadcast they had the pure unblemished hall sound (to my delight) and no commentators anymore. We'll see how it develops over the next days - and what they will tell on the last day about their plans.

Maybe it's just my impression, but the quality of Abema's recorded videos seems to have gotten worse with every basho. Just tried to watch and record today's maezumo session, and there were video artifacts galore, barely five seconds went by without some sort of degradation. The last couple of basho already weren't great, but it's even worse now. I haven't had much of a chance to watch live in recent months, but I recall that looking better. No idea why they've messed up the encoding/compression settings for the recorded files so badly.

“What’s up? to my homies. What’s up? to my haters.” Not good enough for ya? It must be said again. Abema is awful. It makes sumo practically unwatchable

I am watching here

http://live.qq.com/10001119

Live, without delay etc. It is in Japanese, but for me quality is quite good. I think it is abema as well

Sometimes they change location (last six digits in a address) but find is not difficult as well, even I am not able to read what is written on page. There is menu left hand side and usualy summo is transmitted either in .../MLB or in .../fights (three dots are the address live.qq.com)

A recent article had an overview about sumo (pay) services on the net (in Japan) - Abema, NHK on demand (978Yen/month for just makuuchi, not the whole last 5 hours of sumo they broadcast each day) and the NSK sumo app (600Yen/m, only makuuchi, but with big archive). Abema Premium is 960Yen a month if one wants to watch the programs after the free period, which is given as 5 days now. No mention of either end or prolongation of the service next year. http://japanese.engadget.com/2018/11/22/pc/

Articles about Abema still routinely mention their sumo coverage - this one may be a small sign that Abema wants to continue to cover ozumo:

The special format with rikishi charts and diagrams, the telop presentation including info aimed at beginners and the stylish creatives get attention, the age group up to 35 year old accounts for more than 35% of the audience. http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/article?a=20181215-00172900-the_tv-ent

just the relevant part:

Spoiler

大相撲中継では「力士チャート」や「力士相関図」など初心者向けの情報を盛り込んだテロップやスタイリッシュなクリエイティブが注目され、35歳以下の視聴者の割合が全体視聴者の35%以上を占める。

By putting just those charts and info onto the raw NSK stream for the below-makuuchi program, they at least should have found a cheap way to handle the task - it was nearly perfect the last basho: very few commercials, nothing annoying - A great big Thank You to Miselet for providing the the access to all of it

But this is too good to last ...

Abema has the Hatsu basho on the schedule https://abema.tv/search?q=大相撲

same like last basho, with sports channel and extra sumo channel, 4 parts now: jk till makushita, juryo, makuuchi and m.-climax. It remains to be seen if they will stick to pure sound with no comment till juryo - and reduced CMs for makuuchi.
