Day 7

Ms11w ONAMI (1-2)

Gutted for Onami, he's been doing well this year. Arashio-beya says he has a recurrent left shoulder dislocation and is set to have surgery on it after the basho. Up to four months to make a full recovery, if that stands then he'll be out for the Kyushu basho too. :'-(

Other kyujo news: Arashio-beya's Tokkoriki (out from the start) has a ruptured talofibular ligament and dislocation fracture in the right ankle, while Tsunekawa (out on Day 5) suffered a torn radial collateral ligament in the right elbow.

Minezaki-beya's Uminishiki suffered a right knee ligament injury (no more specific info) in keiko before the basho.

Shikoroyama-beya's Hamatensei had knee surgery shortly before the basho.

Finally, Isenoumi-beya's 38-year-old veteran Fujiarashi was hospitalised after suffering from cellulitis of the left leg. He was able to leave the hospital yesterday, possibility of a late entry to the basho if his recovery completes smoothly.

Regarding: Kotomiyakura. Why would a rikishi who is 2-0 go kyujo for a day and immediately announce his return?  Fay?

Our friend, Kotomiyakura was on the torikumi for day 7 and 8. This will give him 4 matches plus an absence.  I wonder if he will have all 7 matches.

That would mean that Kotomiyakura didn't actually withdraw at all; he was just the odd man out for Round 3 and it's being made up in Round 4.

That does make sense.

Yup, looks like it. The handling of the kyujo list has been a total mess this basho; Osunaarashi's return today still isn't listed.

And his posted record on the Day 8 torikumi is 3-3.

Kotomiyakura's absence and return have been removed from the NSK site.

I hope nobody lets him walk for the next 2-3 weeks. If they do, he could carry that damage well beyond his subsequent intai.

I also thought that Osunaarashi's return was posted very late - at least not at the usual time. This new NSK page sucks bigtime in so many different ways...

There is no usual time. You used to be able to almost set your watch by it, now it almost as if it's whenever somoene gets around to it.

Chiyoootori out with an injury- old injury flaring up again, , left knee meniscus-one month rest needed. "It's the old injury again.. He will not be re-joining," said Kokonoe Oyakata. Shoudai gets the freebie.

Makuuchi now down to 38.  Only 19 matches.  27 in Juryo.  That means at least one exchange match each day.

Day 13

Mk25w KAGAMIO (2-4) has withdrawn as of day 13.

Four others return:
Jk12e HOKUTOHOMARE (absent from day 1)
Jk16e YOSHIMOTO (absent from day 1)
Jk18e KOTOSEIGO (absent from day 1)
Jk19w FUJIHISASHI (absent from day 1)

That leaves 13 jonokuchi rikishi who are set to finish 0-0-7. Certainly some of them have gone intai, but that could still be an unusually large group that falls off the banzuke at the same time.

I was kinda expecting Terunofuji to go kyujo after making his MK.

Well if he didn't pull out in May when he was performing even more badly he wasn't going to do it this time.

That's mostly why I expected him to. I was thinking he would have learned from that mistake.

It's not always the rikishi's decision to make.

You mean Isegahama has been pressuring him to stay in? If he is then that is very foolish.

You will sometimes see an obviously injured rikishi stay in the tournament. If an oyakata doesn't withdraw the rikishi, the rikishi stays - the rikishi can't withdraw himself from a tournament and the oyakata doesn't have to give any reason to support him staying in. I think, but am not positive, that the oyakata's income increases with every rikishi he has in a particular basho.

There are training costs being paid by the Kyokai per active rikishi in the stable, but they have nothing to do with actual basho participation.
