I would be interested, but I would prefer to know the rules before committing.

Just 8 5 more player required, and then this game is already to go! Please consider playing (even if you are not a regular football/soccer fan), as this game is fun, but we do need the numbers to make it work. I will be opening it up to 'friends of players' soon, but ideally it would be much nicer if this game is played with sumo gamers/fans whom we all know....

Fujiyama (Mark) says he'll give it a go. I'll get him and Gary to join the forum soon.

Just 5 more slots left!

Let's fill them up - then I'll get the initial admin sorted out this weekend (it is a long weekend here in Hong Kong, due to Monday being 'Dragon Boat Day'.

Can't see Gawasukotto there...didn't Ronnie say he would play? And Gurowake too once he had seen the rules. Some of the Sumotalk lads might be up for it too like Haidouzo.

Ronnie said 'Pass' (see page 1 of this thread), Gurowake has not confirmed his involvement.

I guess we had better open it up to 'friends and family of players...'

(Begging time)

Hi all,

We really need five more players to make this game work. It is a good game, so if you are partly interested in the football/soccer world cup, please consider joining. (please)

I'll join in. Nothing but the World Cup will be happening in this country, so it'll give me something to do, plus being much more informed in this game than in the other :-)

I guess I watched too many episodes of "24" but I was just a bit frightened when I read the phrase "take out my wife..." :-0

Hi everyone!

We now have the full quota, with a couple of reserves.

Over today (and possibly tomorrow), there will be a number of posts with rules, and *more importantly* deadlines for the initial picks. The two reserves are requested to also make picks. In the past, we have had signed-up players miss the first deadline, and so get replaced by the reserves. Hopefully that won't happen this time, but I guess there is a reasonable chance that it might occur.

So, see below for the list of the players ;-)

1. Jejima

2. Fujiko

3. Jakusotsu

4. Pandaazuma

5. Chocshoporyu

6. kuroimori

7. Kintamayama

Call for gyojis referees!

Just to make sure that this post does not get overlooked, I am putting it in first.

We need 8 gyojis referees to make this game work.

For the group stages, each gyoji will get given one of the groups to look after (but not their own). They will then receive the line-ups for each round of matches from the four players, and then announce the line-ups before the round of matches begins, and then announce the results as soon as possible after each round of matches has been completed.

Please let me know if you are willing to help out :-)

I have averaged out the odds from three leading online bookmakers, namely Paddy Power, William Hill and Coral, and have ranked the teams accordingly.

Players who have played before, will know that the top-ranked team (in this case, Brazil) gets matched-up with the lowest ranked team (Honduras). Then the second ranked team (Argentina) gets the second lowest ranked team (Costa Rica) and so on....

When we play, we each take the place of one of the teams in the draw, this is our Representative or ® team. You will take the place of this team in the 'real World Cup'.

We then also get the 'matched-up' team in our squad, known as the 'Counterbalance' team or ©. The ® and © teams have special rules. Basically, (compared to the other teams on your squad) the ® team is powerful, *if* it wins in reality, but is weak if it draws - so very offensive. The © team is more defensive. A draw with a © team is equivalent to a normal win.

After working through the odds, I have decided to split the teams into 10 groups of either 3 or 4 teams. Unlike in the World Cup 2010, and in the Euro 2012, you won't be able to pick another team from the groups containing either your ® or © team. (This should level the playing field a bit. In 2010, the player with the World Cup champs Spain as their ® team, also won this game. Then (when no extra pick from the ® group was allowed) the player with Euro champs Spain as their © team won this game.)

This means, that we will all have 10 teams on our squads.

Let me know (by email - put BWC in the title line please, or by PM here), in order, your top five preferred teams that you would like to represent, something like this....

1. Lichtenstein
2. Andorra
3. Vatican City
4. Malta
5. San Marino

From past experience, some teams, such as Germany, get quite a few picks. To decide who gets to represent such a team, it will be decided by a lucky draw, for all players who put it in 1st place. So, in order not to 'waste' your 2nd-5th picks, probably best to avoid the more popular options...

After 1st picks have been decided, we move onto 2nd picks, and so on, until the 5th picks. If there are players still without a representative team, then they will be assigned one of the remaining teams randomly.

I will send my picks (and I guess Fujiko's) to Jakusotsu and Asashosakari, so as to avoid cheating on my part. Edit: Already sent.

The 'groupings' of teams will be in the next post.

Below are the 32 teams in order of their gambling odds, with their counterbalancing teams (the team you will be 'lumbered' with).

You have until Tuesday (3rd June) 1 pm Japan time to let me know your choices! (Although earlier would be preferred.)

1. Brazil - Honduras

2. Argentina - Costa Rica

3. Germany - Iran

4. Spain - Algeria

5. Belgium - Australia

NOT YET, but after we have been allocated our ® and © teams, we then need to fill out squads with 8 more 'normal' or (N) teams, from the groups that do not contain either your ® or © teams.

These are the groupings, with averaged odds (to 1) in brackets. The 'initial' letter, is the group that the team will be playing in, at the World Cup.

Here are the very probable rules for the group stages! (I am copying and pasting from the old Euro 2012 thread - so, some might need to update some things...)

1. Every player starts with seven teams in his squad. (I am using 'he' and 'his' throughout, as nearly all entered players are male.)
2. Eight teams will be picked from 10 groups (one from each, except from the groups of your 'Representative' and 'Counterbalance' teams), based on similar odds averaged from three leading bookmakers.
3. Two further teams will be added to the player's squad. These two are the team that the player is representing - to be known as ® - plus a 'counterbalancing' team ©. Every player will then have a squad of ten teams.
4. Players will take the place of their ® teams as per the official World Cup 2014 groups, and the later stages rules. They will compete against other players, head-to-head, as per the World Cup 2014. Therefore all players will know in advance who their first three opponents will be, for the group stages.
