Pandaazuma 1,310 Posted January 19, 2014 So which is the best stream? There seem to be quite a few of them.
yade 14 Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) In desperation I digged in the jungle of the net and found the following temporary solution: http://www.myniji.tv/ You have to download the software, register with email address, user name and password, activate the registration code and after activation log in with email address and password. Now you can watch several Japanese streaming TV's, among others NHK. Here in Hungary picture quality acceptable but little sluggish, however you can listen Japanese commentator and watch replays. Better than nothing. this works fine for me. thank you so much ! I dont speak japanese so I am a little confused about the japanese commentary. Since about 20 minutes the commentator seems to talk only about *yamatofuji*. Can someone please explain what he is talking about because it seems he is not even commentating the ongoing matches. (Eh?) I just figured out that the sound is corrupt now. even with a reboot I am not able to hear anything. but I have a picture... Yes, sound was way off and then just died after a few bouts. Yamatofuji is the Makushita guy that beat great new Mongolian hope Ichinojo, causing him to remain another basho in Makushita, come what may. Ah, thanks.... what reminds me the most convenient time before this "youtube-24000vids-vanishing-trick" when those interresting bouts were just 2 clicks away... I am looking forward to that NHK G 25min recap hopefully with sound. Thanks torquato for this note. (Applauding...) Edited January 19, 2014 by yade
Kintamayama 47,168 Posted January 19, 2014 NHK G will broadcast a 25 min. recap of all makuuchi bouts in a few hours at Jan 20th 1:55 a.m. JST, that is this sunday afternoon 19th 17:55 UTC+1 (central continental Europe). The site says it will be on at 1:25 JST.
yade 14 Posted January 19, 2014 So which is the best stream? There seem to be quite a few of them. NIJI works better for me. I do watching it with vlc to settle the ratio problem - little laggy and today it was off sound later... but UBS is hard to watch because my framerate is way off beeing watchable... its like watching a flip book. Also I like the japanese commentary better than the mongolian because you could hear the action sounds (which is missing almost totally on UBS).
Kintamayama 47,168 Posted January 19, 2014 So which is the best stream? There seem to be quite a few of them. I never thought I'd be saying this but stability-wise, ye old Kyokai stream is the best, NIJI-choppy with frequent audio failures. Mongolian-same and even a bit worse as the video is jittery and freezes. Content wise- NHK is far better (when you can see and hear) with interviews and backstage stuff and replays etc.. Summary-a combination of the two would be perfect. As the first option now costs money, it's ultimately your choice. I wonder what would happen if NHK directly (not through a third party) offered their high-quality services online for a fee. I understood yesterday that there is such a thing, but has anyone seen the quality?
Treblemaker 254 Posted January 19, 2014 I've settled on the NIJI -> VLC combo, and the sound was normal, picture as good as the old stream, but here we have the actual NSK/NHK broadcast, so replays, highlights, etc... Actually happier than with the old/new NSK stream, with its Cyclopsian view of the world . Tried UBS, and just got frustrated with the pic and not being able to do anything about the aspect ratio. Commentary (which I didn't understand) gave me the impression that it was much closer to the old "NHK English broadcast" in analysis/convo style, and something I would like to hear more of. Ok, so as long as NIJI sticks around (and there's absolutely NO guarantee of anything in this world), I'm happy.

NHK programme scedule announces 1:55 http://www2.nhk.or.jp/hensei/program/index.cgi?area=001&f=top But can't harm to turn on the programme a bit earlier... ;-)

torquato 1,075 Posted January 19, 2014 I may have missed something somewhere, but is there a way to alter the aspect ratio on UBS as well? I've tried the same method of loading it into VLC (as NIJI) but it doesn't seem to work. Can UBS be played through VLC? link for vlc is rtmp://202.131.233.170/live/ubslive2009 I had tried this also and after one error message the stream displayed fine in vlc with this address. The recording to mp4 was fine. I also for the first time began to dig into the command line features, because I want the recording to start automatically when my PC is switched on (preferably by someone else to do this at the time the broadcast starts, when I am not yet there) - I can't find another way than a batch file in autostart with some lines like Torquato showed. So far I tried this, but it won't work cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC" vlc rtmp://202.131.233.170/live/ubslive2009 --sout"#duplicate{dst=standard{access=file,mux=mkv,dst='C:\Users\aki\Videos\mongol.mp4'},dst=nodisplay}" If you're on a PC it should be vlc.exe. And why not in one line "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe"? I couldn't open the adress rtmp://202.131.233.170/live/ubslive2009 directly in VLC. On unix/ linux the comandline tool 'rtmpdump' does the trick. I just tried it. rtmpdump --live --rtmp "rtmp://202.131.233.170/live/ubslive2009" - | vlc - Sure there will be an equivalent on Windows....
kuroimori 1,634 Posted January 19, 2014 I think I'll go with the jpPlayer. Currently I am using a 3-Day Trial for 10$. They understand to give rebates for longer periods. 1-Month / 30-Day comes at 30$, but the 1-Year Pass costs "only" 200$ - which I would be willing to pay if the NSK would have offered a video streaming + archive service. Besides covering Ozumo with NHK G (eneral), it also includes all other major jp TV stations (Fuji, TBS, etc.) as well as all BS channels (NHK BS, JSports 1 & 2) and CS channels like WOWOW. Actually, today was kind of a huge flashback to when I lived in Japan with all the noisy TV programs. UBS and NIJI will be back-up options, Justin Case. Oh, I could watch the Pacers vs. Clippers NBA game live last night on NHK BS1 (almost another flashback, but the play-by-play in Japanese prevented this. Needless to say that I will tune in to the epic NFL QB battle Patriots vs. Broncos later today!
umbriel2 15 Posted January 19, 2014 I spent 5 dollars for 30 days testing of the Keyhole TV. Picture quality between UBS and NIJI, perhaps closer to UBS. Audio more or less o.k. All in all NIJI is better.
Fukurou 534 Posted January 19, 2014 I need some help getting Niji installed (running Win7). I went to the site and downloaded what I think is the correct file. NijiShow_1.0.6_SETUP.rar I double-click on the RAR file, and WinZIP opens - and wants to add it to an archive. I'm pretty sure that RAR was a compressed file format, like ZIP is. Actually, I thought WinZIP would uncompress a RAR file, but I guess not. Do I have the correct file, and if so, what do I need to do to get this installed? yorikiried by fate 2,038 Posted January 19, 2014 AFAIK WinZIP doesn't handle RAR. You need a third party program. I use this one her and it never failed me: http://free-rar-extract-frog.softonic.de/

Ok, a little setback. jpPlayer does have NHK BS1 (& NHK BS Premium, and many other channels) but it seems there is no option to switch from BS 101 to BS 102, where sports broadcasts are sometimes continued in order to not interfere with the regular scheduled programming... Just found out as during the broadcast of the NFL Playoff match, users have been to change to the sub-channel with their remote control (which doesn't exist in case of online streaming) if they wish to continue to watch the live broadcast of the Patriots Vs. Broncos game. The Sumo broadcasts of lower divisions, starting at 1 p.m, is also on BS 102... :-(

Got Niji installed and running (and running through vlc as well). It turns out that WinZip does handle RAR files, if you have a more current version than I was running. Now to figure out where and what time to watch on Niji. I spotted sumo on 2 different listings, but none were more than 30 minutes or so.
