New kesho mawashi

Recommended Posts

That is pretty amazing. Can't wait to see it as a kesho mawashi. If Nomi-no-Sukune can have facial hair (if that's what that is?) it would be cool to see some wrestler's try it. Many have obviously already emulated his impressive sideburns, so why not?

I like the design. And yes, that is pretty impressive facial hair. In Kikuchi Yōsai’s ink drawing, Nomi no Sukune is quite hirsute. Growing up, we always heard that if a Japanese man had thick and copious facial hair, he must be part Ainu.

Maybe Nomi no Sukune is Ainu. I don't think the other gods would take issue with that. Makes sumo seem even more lost in the mists of time. :)

Yes, perhaps sumo was already being practiced when the "Japanese" arrived.

As I am sure Takayasu can tell you, hair of any kind is a weakness for a wrestler... Besides, I don't seem to recall there being a sumo rule forbidding beard-pulling :-p

The kesho-mawashi for Onosho will have a typical Aomori nebuta design: showing Nomi-no-Sukune, the "founder" of sumo.

Onosho's first kesho-mawashi has been completed and was presented to him at a party recently, along with his akeni.

Hakuho will get a kesho-mawashi set with a character designed by the late manga artist Takashi Yanase, the creator of Anpanman. Tachi-mochi and tsuyu-harai have the kanji 愛 ai (love) and 勇気 yuuki (courage), like in the words of the popular Anpanman march, opening theme from the anime, lyrics by Yanase. One of his supporting companies presents it to him, Asahi-ryokuken, who sells an aojiru health drink for which Hakuho does CMs.

CMs looked good and the 'behind the scenes' compilation at the end was funny. Earlier, I saw a clip about the young guys (a boy band?) learning to do the keiko split, which was funny too. Wish I could understand more Japanese!

Speech and grammar patterns seem relatively easy, but the scripts are a barrier. Time to get serious about lessons.

The presentation. Those manga-type characters on the set were designed by Yanase for the company. Hakuho will use the set for the Meiji-jingu dohyo-iri tomorrow.

Endo got a new kesho mawashi, from a company conglomerate located in his home province Ishikawa, the Kitagawa-bussan group. In his favorite pink with the map of Ishikawa, the hokuriku-shinkansen mascot "hyaku-man-san" (Mr. Million) and a lantern from the Kenroku-en garden in Kanazawa, the symbol of that famous sight-seeing spot in Ishikawa.
Presented by company representative Mr. Kitagawa

Ichinojo got 2 new kesho mawashi from Oyatsu Co., for which he made a baby star ramen "dodekai (giant) ramen" CM recently.
One like a baby star ramen CM, one like a kesho mawashi.
He apparently likes the one with the "ba(b)y-chan" character: "a resemblance, maybe?"
The next will surely CoMe.

Hyaku-man-san looks like if they made the guy on the Pringles can into a Teletubby.

Ishiura like all school OBs gets one from Tottori Johoku, his old high school, where his father is main sumo coach and presented the new kesho mawashi. For the first sekitori from Tottori pref. in 53 years In the local color (a charm against evil spirits) it shows a shishi-(lion mask)-head, used in the local folklore dance. It has the motto of the schools sumo club written on it: "Keiko without cheat - Johoku spirit", and is full of symbols with deep meaning, routed in local culture and history.

Fujiazuma got one with the Fuji TV volley-ball (barei-bouru) World Cup program mascot, Babo-chan.
His 4 brothers and sisters are all volley-ball athletes.
He also appeared in Thermae Romae II, which was co-produced by Fuji TV and aired recently.

The material used for this is resin clay with oil paint knead into, by way of the clay decoration technique.
