The topic includes also new use for old keshō-mawashi .

Furiwake-oyakata visited his old Hirosaki Vocational High school and as a gift presented them with the keshō-mawashi he got from there for juryo promotion.

At last really a new one

Kintarō Ōsunaarashi 大砂嵐 金太郎 for the Natsu-basho (planned) will get a Kintarō (super-strong folklore hero) keshō-mawashi from the Shizuoka pref. town of Oyama, which claims to be the birth place of Kintarō.

The oyakata wanted him to have a shikona first name typical for Japan and took it also for the proverbial strength of Kintarō, who as a kid did sumo with a bear and won. The being the heya's special kanji, and are not only sandstorm but also ateji for his real name: is read “Sha”, ran.

Kise for the Natsu basho from the construction machinery maker Morooka of his home prefecture Ibaraki-ken gets a hand-woven tapestry keshō-mawashi like presently only Hakuho's special set. Usually a keshō-mawashi is manufactured with a less sophisticated technique and costs about 1 million yen to make, these tsuzure-ori ones cost 3 times as much.

Kakuryu/Izutsu-beya is said to lack potent tanimachi, which are needed to have a kesho mawashi-set made for him (I don't link to Weekly Jitsuwa).

How can a fan in America make a donation to Kakuryu's heya or koenkai to help him get his kesho mawashi set?

These mawashi are quite ghastly -- cartoonish, commercial, kawaii, and...well, undignified!!!

Oops, I posted that first reply before I saw the more traditional mawashi designs. I like the simple blue ones for Tokushoryu and Homarefuji.

Still, Kise's new kesho mawashi should easily make the Top Ten of worst designed kesho mawashi of all times.

He really tries hard to make a happy face while must think something like:

"Thank you sooo very much for making me hold this sh**ty skirt AND for inviting the press. This is so degrading..."

I think it's a perfectly fine kesho-mawashi. There's room for a little fun in sumo; not everything has to be a work of art or have some deep and meaningful connection with ancient history. Anyway, seems to me he's happy enough when they let him drive one of their vehicles!

Kise’s happy expression while driving that vehicle is too funny. XD

I also don't think that kesho mawashi and all the other stuff always has to carry all the tradition with it (I like the kesho mawashi that features a picture of Charlie Chaplin), it's just that this very kesho mawashi is downright ugly.

Kesho mawashi don't have to bear a traditional design (some of those are overdone), but anything that turns a person -- especially a rikishi -- into a biped advertisement is tacky.

Kisenosato is no stranger acting as advertising pillar. Remember the days he was wearing Hello Kitty (aka Halokti)?

At least he should have been given the option of wearing "Chococat" -- much manlier!
