New kesho mawashi

Recommended Posts

Ichinojo got a new one at the Nagoya encouragement rally of his koenkai. The design is the Fuji flower (wisteria) of Konan-city, where the heya's lodgings for Nagaoya are located, a bird, as he's born in the year of the rooster/chicken/bird, with flames (thus a firebird/phoenix).

A new ozeki-style (purple baren) kesho-mawashi for Terunofuji from the Isegahama-beya Tokai-region-koenkai

Allowed to use the color purple in the kesho mawashi, which is forbidden up to sekiwake.
...
this constraint is for the "baren" part only, the sagari type cords on the bottom of the kesho-mawashi

He selected the design himself, a bear with 15 shiro-boshi (white stars=wins).

I couldn't help but laugh at what looks like an aimless frustrated bear swatting at mosquitoes in the dark.

I want to see Amuru's new kesho mawashi... can you show that?

The decorative element seems to be the Kanji 夢 (yume), which means 'dream', 'vision'.

Amuru changed to the blue of his 2 old wolf design ones a few days ago, 5 days the same for him, a usual pattern. Several others changed today, on nakabi, e.g. Yoshikaze and Toyonoshima, also several in juryo, where the rikishi have usually not that much to chose from. Goeido changes back and forth, Terunofuji can't let go of his new one.

No, that's just the middle part of his shikona from top to bottom on the left side.

Yes it is. It is actually one and the same. Something, I must confess, I was't aware of. The middle part of his shikona is in fact this 夢 (yume). :)

Well, no it isn't "the decorative element". That this kanji is part of his shikona is very well known to me.

I think the white 夢 (yume) is pretty and decorative. It is at least stylised or calligraphic. The shikona is also present in full in a more simple classical style in red.

For a change a very old one, of 27th yokozuna Tochigiyama
New is that a relative donated it to the (relatively new) city of Tochigi, of which now the hometown of Tochigiyama is a part.
Silk with a golden chrysanthemum and a silver stream running - one of a yokozuna set of 3, one other is in a museum of the city, one in the sumo museum in the kokugikan.

Myogiryu got one from ("Power Production" brand) sports supplements (etc.) maker Ezaki Glico - he uses the firms supplements since high school, to gain (muscle) mass: "I believe that what is invested gives return. (Supplements) are also a work tool" - in his quest for ozeki.

Goeido got another one from his old high school, Saitama Sakae. For juryo promotion in Kyushu 2006 he got the standard type, now one in black with the school emblem and the words "learn today", according to the school motto "Doing today what can be done today".

One from the coach of his Toyo univ. sumo club and that supporters club, the Kanazawa Murata tomo-no-kai (friends club), showing impressions from the Kenroku-en in Kanazawa city, where the coach is from (the symbol mark lantern like on one for Endo recently).

One from the Dewanoumi-beya "Dewanoumi-kai" koenkai (there is one at each basho location, Tokyo and the 3 regional ones)

One from his own new koenkai will follow sometimes later

From the local JA cooperative by way of his new local koenkai he will get one on Jan. 6th.

It has a design like the boxes for shipping Ontake cabbage (I always read the 御嶽はくさい Ontake-hakusai at first as Ontake ha(wa) kusai, Ontake stinks - as a volcano does, shitsurei shimashita)

It shows Mt Ontake and the kanji for both Ontake and Mitake.

A very old kesho mawashi and other treasures in the possession of schools are on display in Kurume-city, Fukuoka. Of former sekiwake Onogawa, from Zendoji-machi, now part of that city. A descendant of his had given it to a local primary school. On display together with a nishiki-e with a kesho-mawashi of the same design. http://www.nishinippon.co.jp/nnp/f_chikugo/article/216806

The new golden set of Harumafuji has cost about 30 to 40 million yen to make, 10 times or more the usual amount for a set. The phoenix on it was designed by Shin Taga (I omit the link to his homepage or pics, they might be offending), depicted with inter-weaved threads of gold. A decorative circular element is made of about 300g of pure gold.

Anybody other than me thinks this is a bit...um, much?

Who's paying for the set? I'm sure I'm gonna get a bit of stick for this but it's basically 3 glorified aprons for the cost of a Lamborghini, sorry for the bluntness.

It says Rembrand Hotel, the search gives Atsugi, Kanagawa, as the location, not THAT expensive a hotel, but maybe some Lamborghini parked there. The (Kanagawa) koenkai pays a big part I guess, not only the hotel.
