Igordemorais 75 Posted May 20, 2012 (edited) Should Kyokutenho wins this it will be indicative of how boring sumo has become provided the most boring rikishi ever winning is the most exciting thing that has happened if not ever than in last few years. Ruziklao 34 Posted May 20, 2012 (edited) Messy finish of Kyokutenho bout - have you seen Goeido step out on the stream? Edit: thanks, Doitsuyama. Clear. Edited May 20, 2012 by Ruziklao
Doitsuyama 1,194 Posted May 20, 2012 Messy finish of Kyokutenho bout - have you seen Goeido step out on the stream? Not exactly step but he clearly brushed a lot of sand outside the dohyo with his toes. Video is linked on Sumo Reference.
Doitsuyama 1,194 Posted May 20, 2012 Oh, and Hakuho's legendary streak of 27 consecutive basho with yusho or jun-yusho is broken with Kyokutenho's win.
Ruziklao 34 Posted May 20, 2012 (edited) Maegashira yusho!!! Edit: Oh well, I probably should contain my excitement, but it is so difficult now... I have usual soft spot for underdogs and on top od all ... after yesterday's ice hockey win by Slovakia I have really lost my temper. I wish Kyokutenho would take this basho. But Tochiozan would be ok too, obviously. Edited May 20, 2012 by Ruziklao
Doitsuyama 1,194 Posted May 20, 2012 And we will have a maegashira winner in a kettei-sen for the first time ever...
shimodahito 317 Posted May 20, 2012 much thanks to your video crew.. they are going up fast!
shimodahito 317 Posted May 20, 2012 never understood why the bulk of the kensho go to the last match, even when it's not a yusho factor....
Maguroyama 27 Posted May 20, 2012 Crazy, all of it. Even if this feels like a low-quality yusho, I'm glad it wasn't decided by a fusen-sho. Think, if Goeido hadn't lost so narrowly, Tochiozan would have picked up the yusho by fusen...
Asashosakari 19,688 Posted May 20, 2012 And we will have a maegashira winner in a kettei-sen for the first time ever... Fitting enough that it takes an all-maegashira bout for it to happen. (Laughing...)
Maguroyama 27 Posted May 20, 2012 And so the longest streak ever of consecutive yokozuna/ozeki yusho comes to an end. If I count correctly, 62 yusho in a row were won by the top two ranks. It's also the longest streak without a hiramaku yusho that now ends. Will the streak of 36 straight yusho one by non-Japanese also end?
Igordemorais 75 Posted May 20, 2012 He did it! The people's champion did it!!!!!
yorikiried by fate 2,029 Posted May 20, 2012 Feels like an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement. The crowd would clearly have preferred to see it given to Jean-Luc Godard.
Kintamayama 45,543 Posted May 20, 2012 Conspiracy theorists, even the best of them, will not be able to justify even one of their theories-No Kisenosato, no Japanese yusho winner.. but wait-I have one!! Kyokutenhou didn't retire because he was promised a yusho!!! I knew it!!! That said, Hakuhou-Harumafuji.. Hmm..
kuroimori 1,634 Posted May 20, 2012 First ever yusho for Kyokutenho in 20 years! That's quite some preparation time to get the big one! Maybe he calls it a career now at the best possible moment anyone could imagine?

Ruziklao 34 Posted May 20, 2012 So instead of Oshima oyakata he is Natsu Basho winner. Oyakata duties could have waited. ;-) Anyway, it looks like Kyokutenho's right hand has never touched the dohyo at the start of kettei-sen...

Hey, of course we have a Japanese yusho winner! Kyokutenho acquired Japanese citizenship, so everything's fine...

Kyokutenhou didn't retire because he was promised a yusho!!! I knew it!!! That said, Hakuhou-Harumafuji.. Hmm.. Well, one could argue that nobody considered that old Mongolian veteran to be a threat for a Japanese yusho and Kyoku was pissed for being taken for granted... ;-) but I do not want to fan the flames of this endless debate again. I'd rather start working on my most likely crappy Banzuke Guess for Nagoya (can't wait for your unique invitation post!)
dazunoyama 2 Posted May 20, 2012 Really enjoyed the excitement of the yusho race of this basho but thinking the 6-strong ozeki crew should feel ashamed that none of them cold step up and take the yusho...
