News on Baruto?

Recommended Posts

Baruto's situation is "delicate", says the paper today. This morning, he did some tachi-ai, teppo and butsugari, but did no shiko or any bouts. "There is still pain and there's the fear. I'd like to decide 5 days before shonichi (to enter or not)", said Baruto. "I don't want him to do anything unreasonable", added Onoe Oyakata.

Well, i hope hes only doing this for apperances...he shouldnt be doing anything right now. I hope he comes to his senses and takes this basho off. Then, if he is superhuman and does heal almost 100%, lets see him add a second juryo yusho to his credit.

His knee is 50%. "If I get demoted to Juryo by going kyujo so be it. I'm still young. I'll do some serious keiko and come right back up!!", said Baruto.

But what an unluck he has...first the appendix, now the knee- we all know that will bother him for the rest of his life... (Holiday feeling...)

He really HAS been unlucky. But at least he seems to have the sense not to enter this basho at all costs, which should have been self-evident since the injury.

Sadly, as ilovesumo was saying, we all know this injury won't just disappear - give it a few basho, and there will be a thread on this forum reading "Baruto re-injures his knee". It's a real shame, he has the potential to give sumo an additional dimension - so let's hope he really takes his time, and somehow learns to make avoiding injuries one of his priorities, at the cost of losing an extra bout here and there.

I must have missed something. Is Baruto definately out of this basho?

In a word, YES.

From Nikkan Sports:

(Baruto) cannot even do shikoss and cannot participate in Moushiai sessions.

"I am experiencing pain. If I happen to injure the same place, I may never able to continue so I won't get back unless I am fully recovered. I am planning to make the final decision by five days prior to the start (of basho) but I will accept the demotion to Juryo even if I need to witthdraw from whole bashos if necessary," Baruto said.

"It means what we are trying to achieve in the final anaylsis. There is no point in forcing it right now and suffering a career ending injury. At the moment he is about 50% but unless he can display 150%, I won't let him go back. He just needs to come back again when he falls down on the banzuke," Onoe oyakata, his shisho said.

Baurto only took a dozen bashos to get to Makuuchi after his dohyo debut. He is ranked at Maegashira West 13 this basho.

I dont think he has been unlucky at all in terms of injuries. He simply is not very well coordinated, and does not know how to fall properly.

If he does not cure this defect, then he is bound to be injured again and again.

Dunno if it's the right vocabulary, I had to use an online translator for this word, but he also has problems with his longs (hope you understand me (Holiday feeling...) ) - he got over flexible, so the knee is instable- knowing how to fall won't help turning around and the knee overflexes like last basho.

As the saying goes---better to be safe than sorry. If he is only 50% at this time I have serious doubts that he will be 150% five days before the basho begins. Isn't learning how to fall one of the first lessons in sumo?

We have a similar discussion going on in the German sumo forum right now. In my opinion, Baruto (and Kotooshu or Wakanoho FWIW) simply didn't have enough time in the lower divisions - still overcoming the foreigner's barriers - to properly learn the first lessons. Now they've reached Sekitori, it's totally up to them to elaborate on the basics. Their lower-ranked heya-mates won't offer advice anymore unless explicitly asked for.

Learning how to fall is a very big asset that many sekitori learn while in the lower divisions. I think you're right, Jak, some of the european/eurasians are having a hard time with this aspect.

"... but I will accept the demotion to Juryo even if I need to withdraw from whole bashos if necessary," Baruto said.

"... There is no point in forcing it right now and suffering a career ending injury. " Onoe oyakata, his shisho said.

These are the smartest things either one of them has said on this matter so far.

I agree.

Right after the injury, Bart sounded so angry and just wanted to get back as fast as possible. Seems like someone sat down with him and gave him the low-down on things.

No real news, but with "5 days before" having passed, they're now saying that they will make a decision by Thursday, the last day before the Day 1/2 bouts are set.

(I suspect he'll compete.)

Hmmm, I remember a very similar timeline when Hakuho broke his Little Piggy, but he withdrew right at the very end, right? If memory serves . . .

Ok, pepper steak says he's in. Today he did shiko and even butsugari and his situation seems to be better. "I'd like to enter by all means. If I wasn't planning on entering, what the heck am I doing shikos for?? ", said Baruto. He still has that black bandage on his knee and stuff, so we can't say he is in great shape.. "He is getting better, but he's got to fully recover before he can enter..", said a worried Onoe Oyakata. It looks like the final decision will be made on Thursday.

Looks like Baruto is about to join the dark side and become a journeyman rikishi, tending his various owies and riding the wave up n' down the mid-maegashira ranks. (I am not worthy...)

I guess there is something to be said for taking the time to rise more slowly through the ranks if you'd otherwise only rise because you have 1 strong point (power).

The same goes for every job btw.

Don't run before you can walk or otherwise you'll end up hurting yourself and your entire future.

It was a beautiful day and a big shock when I realised that in this thread there have been NO Estonian forum members' comments. As a matter of fact Estonian sumoforum seems quite dead and some previously active Estonian sumoforum members have not even logged on this forum in ages. However, there are still quite many visits from Estonia and it is in top 10 countries but also in that there is a definite decrease. Maybe:

1. Baruto has stopped telling anything to Estonians

2. Estonians have suffered from Baruto's injury problem and sumo enthusiasm is decreasing

3. They have new secret sumoforum where many discussions rampant, live feed from Baruto rehab, exclusive interviews with Baruto and Yamamotoyama in yacuzzi

4. Estonians have started to dislike the tone of discussion on our forum for some reason (that has happened with some nationalities)

Whatever is the reason, it is quite interesting that no comments by any Estonian members in Baruto-thread. You know, joining the sacred EU and all you should be very open, benign and heart warming nation with propensity to deliver all Baruto info you can get hold of! You have many good doctors with good skills, humour and very good Finnish with charming accent and I have yet to meet a mean Estonian doctor so sumoforum members should show similar altruism and embrace us all with detailed Baruto-news! Thank you for your understanding and co-operation on matters. By noon tomorrow there must be MRI images of Baruto's knee scanned and posted on forum. Otherwise embassies may be contacted.

Speaking of the Bart guy, I think he might well enter and even do quite well until he gets dashinaged or defensive. The KNEE will be very vulnerable in Natsu too so maybe he just thinks he should give it a go anyway and try to get some sumo feel back. Flames and burning is my vision for him but as House reacted when person Y told him that "you burn your money with that bet": "I will burn my winnings after the race, they burn with bigger flames", Baruto too may come up with this clever saying if he wins yusho and goes on an ultimate smile parade in a car with Satoyama. Baruto is Baruto. Very big man, very big smile, very big knee handicap.
