Sumo July tournament new recruit results:

(Isegahama stable) 2006 Mar 6 Origiru Ganzorig (Mongolia / Saitama) 168cm 79kg

(Miyagino stable) 1999 Dec 25 Masatada Otani (Niigata / Okinawa) 184cm 188kg

The 2 have passed, published today, maezumo starts on day 3. https://www.jiji.com/jc/article?k=2022071000190&g=spo

No shikona given yet for Origiru.

He lived in Japan for at least 10 years and thus is treated as Japanese. https://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXZQOKC101MZ0Q2A710C2000000/

Forgive my ignorance, but how can Isegahama recruit another foreigner besides Terunofuji?

Same as Hokuseiho and others recently

Didn't Terunofuji gain citizenship? Don't fully know the rules on that.

Edit: nvm Akinomaki already responded haha.

So, he has lived in Japan for at least 10 years, but isn't a Japanese, right? Treating him as a Japanese sounds a little bit unfair to other beya. Why shouldn't i.e. Kasugano say "wait a minute, Tochi's here since 16+ years, why not treat him as a Japanese"? I think that's doubleplusungood.

Living in Japan 10 years before the age limit of the shin-deshi kensa is the idea. No need to teach those the Japanese culture, language etc.

So far we had none who graduated from university and came for the start of middle school in this group - maybe in a few years

Yeah, i get that, but then why not treat ALL foreigners, who have been in Japan for a specific time like Japanese and open foreigner slots? As i said, Tochi's been here longer, he's been a freakin' Ozeki! You don't have to teach him more Japanese culture. Yet he blocks a foreigner-slot And what about a kabu? Will Origiru be treated as a Japanese there? No, just no. As a shisho with long-time foreigner and a promising foreigner prospect, i'd release the lawyers.

Another aspect is, the NSK - at least in my eyes - NEEDs more foreigners to fill up the ranks in the future. Treating foreigners as Japanese after a specific time, whilst retaining the one-foreigner per heya rule, would open up Ozumo for more foreigners, but we wouldn't see the sudden surge, some traditionalist apparently fear.

Who arrives in Japan as (near) adult won't be able to be that much Japanese as those who really are children.

A good lawyer would rip that argumenation at least 2 new ones. I'd agree for younglings, who never really experienced and can't remember life outside Japan, but that's my only concession. And then there a some undertones of racism.

Heya website profile gives Origiru's full shikona as 幸乃富士  正龍, although unfortunately they don't do readings. Yukinofuji?

Assuming no atypical readings, I'm guessing Kōnofuji or Sachinofuji instead; more likely the latter than the former.

For every Naruto-oyakata there is a Osunaarashi, they can't tell who is going to be who and then decide on a case by case basis.

Yeah he really didn't help the cause, for a second time.

So maezumo will consist of two lads bouncing against each other time and time again, and one of them is more than twice as heavy as the other. Neat.

Courtesy of Herouth that maezumo vid is out. No real surprise as to the outcome, I suppose. The commentary confirms Orgil's shikona as Sachinofuji.

This is also going to sound a bit wrong but does anyone else find Sachinofuji cute - like Enhō levels of cute?

At least he stayed in the ring longer than Hattorizakura in his whole career.

I think it's weird that there was only one bout on day 4, why would Okuyama and Otani sit the day out? They didn't meet on day 5 as well, and it doesn't make sense to not have them meet at all as both are 2-0 against the other two. They also aren't from the same heya. I'm going to assume that they met on day 4 and that Otani won... (Idunno...)

It's just that the NSK posted only a pic of this bout that day and Miselet hasn't posted day 4. I checked the playlist with the complete Abema basho coverage, you're right Otani won that meeting.
