Miselet Plus YouTube Videos Removed

On October 22, all archived Ozumo videos posted by Miselet Plus were suddenly blocked. Trying to access them, the following message is displayed:

[This video] is no longer available due to copyright claim by A-PAB.

The corpus of videos posted by MP included all divisions from all honbasho for several years back and is a great loss. I spent about a month per basho watching Juryo, then Makuuchi, then Sandanme as time permitted, as I live 13 time zones behind Japan.

Does anyone know what happened or where to find (or subscribe) to this content?

If they are not available, that means they are either blocked or removed. They probably got a copyright strike and had to take action. Unfortunately these are probably not coming back.

Copyright protection is important, but if copyright holders are going to insist their content gets removed, I wish they would make it available in other ways. Whoever owns the copyright to old sumo footage could just put it online on their own channel and reap all the rewards.

Usually I'd say that they are probably making a cost-benefit decision not to commercialize the footage. If they are taking the time to submit copyright claims, however, they are clearly already spending money on dealing with the footage. Why not just invest it in creating a distribution channel?

He'll probably be back, Miselet Plus itself was already the second channel after all. The question is if the next one will last this long again, now that he's on their radar.

Anyway, A-PAB appears to be this. Not sure why they'd be the ones putting in the copyright claim, rather than either NHK or Abema. I do have a feeling Miselet got dinged for the NHK-sourced content again (that's what killed his previous channel); maybe he'd be better served posting only the Abema streams, even though NHK of course has the superior coverage.

That's a bit of a simplistic view. Their legal department is likely getting paid either way, so it's not like not pursuing copyright violations would free up significant resources.

It's probably a question of whether they notice it or not.  I think how it works here is that if you don't defend your copyright knowing someone has violated it, then you lose all claim to it.  So they're probably not hiring people with the explicit task of finding copyright violators, since there isn't much they stand to gain if they aren't using that copyright right then, but if someone tells them about someone violating their copyright, they stand to lose their chance of ever getting to use it themselves if they don't do something about it then.

Did they monetise their videos? I do subscribe to the channel, but I have a very strong ad-blocking regime on my browser, so I can never tell. I imagine if the videos were/will be monetised, then that blip on their radar will be much larger

Let me express my big respect to all sumo fans!

I saw the new topic opened at your forum concerning my activity and I want to tell you in a few words about our channel MISELETJ

My wife and I have been watching sumo for a long time. In the beginning it was broadcasted on Euro sport channel. Later we began regular searches for Live Stream in the Internet. We knew that there were many others who loved sumo as much as we do. So we decided to open a YouTube channel to make sumo available to everyone.

The MISELET channel was opened in 2016 and we posted full versions of sumo tournaments for all divisions. We were motivated by our love for sumo and a desire to popularize this beautiful sport.

Believe me we have no financial interest, as we have not activated monetization option!

Channel MISELET was multidisciplinary. In addition to sumo there were videos of other types of sports. But we received warnings for several RUGBY videos on violation of copyrights and as a result the channel was blocked out.

Then we decided to open the channel MISELET Plus, where the main accent was on sumo. Everything went well. But in early October, after the end of Aki 2018, when all the videos were already published, we received the first warning from YouTube on the complaint of "A-PAB". The company claimed copyright for "Aki 2018, Makuuchi - Day 9".  And on October 18, we received two warnings at the same time – Makuuchi - Days 13 and 14 and the channel MISELET Plus was blocked. We wrote a letter to "A-PAB" to withdraw the complaint as we do not pursue commercial purposes and we have no financial interest, but there was no answer and probably will not be.

Finally, few words about our plans. We will continue streaming sumo tournaments and will definitely open the channel MISELET Sumo! We will upload both, old and new videos as long as we have strength and capabilities!!!

P.S. Our goal is to show the full version of the tournament to those who can't see it in LIVE. Time will show how it will turn out.

This is great news! Honbasho footage is the essence of sumo.

My personal preference is Abema. I like the subtle background music and English transliteration of shikona. Does Abema broadcast all divisions? If so, that may be the solution.

Abema shows all divisions and is available live worldwide if you are willing to use a VPN.  Work your way through this topic to get the details.

No, let ME express my enormous respect to YOU!  You have provided me with endless pleasure, watching your superb sumo broadcasts.

I am disgusted that you have been bounced off Youtube - again - and I sincerely hope that you will be back.  I will write a nasty message to A-PAB, whoever they may be, if I can find them.

Shortly about our channels at Youtube. As we announced we created the channel "MISELET Sumo" and it was working until recent period.

On the fifth day of Haru Basho 2019, some of our videos were blocked due to a complaint from Abema TV, which was very strange, as the blocked videos were from both channels - the Abema TV and NHK. If you are interested I can provide screenshots of notifications about the removal of those videos. We haven't received any warning and on the seventh day the channel “MISELET Sumo” has been blocked. Yesterday, also without warning, was blocked another our channel "Aki Basho 2018”. At this channel were uploaded all videos of the September Basho 2018, which were blocked in October 2018 and because of that the channel “MISELET Plus” was also blocked. We have no time and desire to argue with them and seek justice. Feeling as if we are dealing with a capricious child who has great credentials and he does not knows what he wants and what is doing.

So we want to ask you for advice on how we should proceed. We want our archive records of all (lower) divisions be available for all, we have no commercial interest, we can even provide them (for free) to anyone who will be able to put them for public viewing. And videos of every next Basho will be submitted promptly while we are able to record them. Or maybe anyone will advise how it is possible to make these records available for sumo fans. We, in our turn, keep looking for ways out of this situation and hope to resolve the problem by Natsu 2019 to let sumo fans to enjoy the tournament.

Thanks for all your efforts including Kintamayama and Mbovo.  It would be a shame to lose all the footage as it seems it is very difficult to maintain a public youtube account lately.  I've also had my original channel taken down due to copyright strikes and find that keeping videos and playlists as 'unlisted' has prevented another channel takedown (so far).  Any videos that turn up as "blocked" in video manager I delete immediately and move to  a different platform like Dailymotion.  Dailymotion also removes copyrighted videos, but for some reason the ones that I have uploaded have remained and it has thus far dated back to two years ago.  

Only those given links to the videos/playlists can view them.  It doesn't get as much views since it is not promoted by youtube thus less of a chance into the hands of copyright holders.  Here is an example of a link in my About Me section of my forum profile.

Both the playlist and videos are kept as 'unlisted'.  The channel has survived for a little over a year now.  It is still taking a chance, but keeping my views and subscribers down may also play a part in keeping the channel up.

I checked the Aki Basho 2018  channel when it was linked from the live channel, especially the Haru basho 2019 playlist it contained. There you had again videos from makuuchi, which now apparently are a time-bomb. In order to increase the chances of survival for a channel, I would suggest a new channel per basho, for only the videos with the pure NSK sound, jonokuchi till juryo, and as Inhashi mentioned, unlisted individual videos, but listed in playlists for each day.

And of course many, many thanks for your efforts - I've put my full attention to your streams and videos and practically am ignoring NHK by now.

I also had 7 videos blocked by Abema on day 5. The only problem is I never used Abema...

Hi Miselet,

I second inhashi's recommendation of using Dailymotion as an alternative to YouTube. I've had good experiences with it myself in the past, and it seems a lot more free from the over aggressive copyright stance that YouTube takes. In other words, it's a bit more off the radar, it might be worth a try?

By the way, can I ask if the copyright notice you received was similar to the one that Kintamayama and Asashosakari received? Did it mention anything about title labelling or a third party?
