Kintamayama

Hakuhou injured.

Darn. I was hoping he'd keep socking it to the NSK with free kinboshi.

Keep in mind this is a man that kept a severed tendon and ligament (right toe) for years without knowing and thinking that it was just his body becoming stiff with time.  It would cause frequent dislocations because of the severed tendon yet he would just continue sumo by taping the area.  He was without any kind of visible physical difficulty that even he was aware of.  That was the only time I recall Hakuho withdrawing from a basho that started in 2015.

Thank you for this background information behind the scenes. That explains Hakuho's injuries from the surgeon and from the morning. You did not see this when he lost the basho against Yoshikaze.

Now you guys are being mean --- I'm starting to think there actually is some weird sock rule for Yokozuna.

Nope, there actually is a rule, although I won't try and dig out the mention of it.

We're never mean when it comes to arcane sumo trivia.

ps. OK, I lied. I did try and dig it out:

Lower ranks are also allowed to wear two socks, but their design is mandatory. Therefore, most guys just don't do it.

You looked in the right place - I tried as well, but didn't find anything on the net - I got it from a long TV interview with Kyokutenho as the oldest in makuuchi - might be still on YT, but it would take hours to find it
