Don't ask me about the rest though, it doesn't really make any sense to me. Thanks. I think the good cook man is because near the end of the article it mentions how he buys his own ingredients and cooks Georgian food at home. Nicholas Cage though? Don't get it. First line is "Yokozuna Nicholas Cage". Funny.

That's not hard (I just learned the 盛り上げた verb too). 横綱2人が休場した大相撲を盛り上げたのは“角界のニコラス・ケイジ”、栃ノ心(30)。 Tochinoshin, the "Nicholas Cage" of the sumo world, brought excitement to Ozumo after the kyujo of 2 Yokozuna. I gave up when I got to " 負ける姿が浮かばないくらい強かった " and couldn't make sense of it despite knowing most of the words. There's just so many ways to translate some words that trying to get something that makes sense is really hard as someone who doesn't know the language at that well. Gurowake 4,111 Posted January 28, 2018 (edited) The Japanese wikipedia page for him indicates that it's a nickname for him, but doesn't give a source as far as I can tell. But yes, I just assumed he looks a little like Nick Cage. Unusually, it doesn't have his blood type. Perhaps because he's not Japanese, and so he doesn't care a whit about it unless he needs to receive or donate blood. But you can find it on, for example, Shohozan's. It wouldn't surprise me, but keep in mind that page probably has every single piece of interesting information reported on him in the Japanese press. So they just may have got it from the sources that Wikipedia editors did.

rzombie1988 159 Posted January 28, 2018 (edited) Tochinoshin picked the right basho to get hot. This was one of the weakest in a basho's long time. I think we're going to be seeing more variety amongst winners. Kakuryu should have never been Yokozuna, Hakuho's near the end and who knows if Kise/Terunofuji will ever be back to 100%. Rocks 1,809 Posted January 28, 2018 I have to say I am very impressed with Ryuden this basho. Watching his slow but steady progression through juryo it seemed like there were a few matches every basho where he had a lack of focus. His makuuchi debut was completely different. He's been in every match hard like Chiyonokuni, just giving his best. And it's paid off. Kudos to him. He deserves any special prize he gets. And in keeping with comparing rikishi to American actors I think Ryduen looks like Steven Seagal.
PawnSums 59 Posted January 28, 2018 does anyone think that next basho will have a Neckless yusho winner?

There's a vacuum at the top ranks now, and not enough losses are going to be handed down from up top to stop the lower ranks from picking up a yusho here and there. I wouldn't be surprised to see a new Ozeki this year.

Ten days later, Kakuryu was undefeated and was looking very good. The consensus seemed to be that he was in complete control and the was basho was his to lose. Unfortunately, he did. We now seem to have returned to that same generally held belief before the basho began. Tochinoshin is now starting an ozeki run. The same feeling prevailed when Kyokutenho won his only yusho at 13-2. He had a similar looking record the next basho but it unfortunately was 2-13. Tochinoshin's record in the Haru basho should be a lot better than that. The big question is how much better. Edited January 28, 2018 by sekitori

Heck, the Kyokai didn't even bother to promote him to sanyaku, that spoke loud and clear what they thought of that idea.

Rocks 1,809 Posted January 28, 2018 Man Hidenoumi blew that. Never should have went for that late pull. Takagenji gets his KK.
Amamaniac 2,079 Posted January 28, 2018 It's official that Tochinoshin will face Endo on the senshuraku. There was plenty of speculation in the last three to four days of the tournament concerning whom Tochinoshin would face on the final day. Endo's name entered the mix on day 13, but before that he was not under consideration (by NHK's sources). I'm sure that Tochinoshin is happy about the choice. Most of his wins this tournament netted him relatively small purses (with a few exceptions). Endo is good for at about 10 kensho. But given that Tochinoshin is the tournament's champion, I wouldn't be surprised if the total goes as high as 15. That will make for good motivation for both wrestlers to give it their all. A highlight after that will be the bout between Kotoshogiku and Takarafuji. Both men have 7-7 records, and there should be a decent purse for the winner, not to mention the KK. The yusho race might be over, but there is still plenty to watch.
Rocks 1,809 Posted January 28, 2018 And Myogiryu wins. We have a 2 man playoff for Juryo yusho for sure. If Aoiyama wins it will be 3. Great record for Myogiryu after he's been the last few basho.
Rocks 1,809 Posted January 28, 2018 Aoiyama loses giving Daiamami his KK keeping him in makuuchi. Aoiyama likely will stay in juryo next basho.
Rocks 1,809 Posted January 28, 2018 Myogiryu wins the playoff and takes the Juryo yusho. Congrats to him and his return to makuuchi. Who gets the 2nd promotion slot is anybody's guess.
Rocks 1,809 Posted January 28, 2018 Nishikigi wins so he's safe for sure. Takakaze loses dropping to 5-10. Maybe he's iffy for makuuchi next basho. He looked terrible in the loss. Ishiura wins the battle of the henka Princes against Kotoyuki. Another ugly match.
