Ichinojo - Goeidou: as they say in basketball, you can't teach height.

Today we saw Ichinojo A again (as opposed to yesterday's Ichinojo B) -- someone on the offensive, with initiative, not afraid of changing technique when something does not work. I wish we saw this guy more often. This basho has been a treat.

I prefer to call him, Ichinojo (Awake) and Ichinojo (Asleep).

And we're back to bad quality for day 14-these bad quality vids are best watched in "youtube size". much less fuzzier, of course..

Tackling the backlog...lower division stuff from Day 10. Featuring a spirited back-and-forth bout from sandanme, one more in high makushita, a painful-looking post-bout flattening in a big vs small jonidan bout, and another big vs small matchup with rikishi you might actually have heard of (Akiseyama-Enho). Also the near-daily DQ loss - take note of perpetrator Kamito, he'll feature again on a later day.

And then we've got a trio of rare kimarite, namely the sounds-cooler-than-it-looks okurinage, and two that deserve highlighting:

This is the yūshō interview… can anyone pin-point me to where he addresses the day 11 monoii stuff? I didn’t catch it.

Kinta-san, thanks for all the vids. Having been sucked in by one of your translations last basho, I refrain this time around. I do like your highlights the best of all the posted ones I've seen. I enjoy hearing the Japanese along with the bouts here and there. And, like a bit of nihonshu or shochu, a little wit is also well appreciated. Como arigato gozaimasu.

Right at the start, 20 seconds into the video, after the interviewer asks him how he feels about having won an unprecedented 40th yuushou.

If you're in the mood for a bit more sumo despite today's apparently gloomy news...lower divisions Day 11. Featuring a nice little battle in jonokuchi, a three-minute bout with decent amount of activity in jonidan, a nifty double turnaround at the edge, nice action for kachikoshi in the makushita promotion zone, and slap-pull-slap-pull-slap-etc.-etc. also up there.

Kimarite highlights: ashitori and kekaeshi.

And inline: A wild one from mid-makushita.

And for Day 12: a merry-go-round, two minutes of gritty determination with a neat finish, frantic attack vs. equally frantic defense, skinny Hikarugenji being unstoppable, a spinning slippiotoshi, and Toyonoshima gaining his KK to great applause.

In kimarite: the best of three kubinage on the day, another kekaeshi, kotehineri, and a tsukihiza loss.

And the highlight: Angryface Kamito, fresh off his Day 10 hansoku DQ.

And finally the last round of lower division bouts. Amongst the usual stuff Days 13 to 15 will include all matches involving rikishi who were 0-6 (if you want to know the most unfortunate participants of the basho), and those who were 5-1 and fighting for the big 6-1 promotions.

So, Day 13. Some nice sumo, but not a lot of genuine highlights. Worth a special mention are a nifty little bout at the jonidan-sandanme border, and a low jonidan match with a neat kimarite (kakenage) where the bout is pretty good in its own right.

Elsewhere in kimarite: another (but rather messy) kakenage, the second watashikomi of the basho, and yet again isamiashi.

A bit hard up for highlights, I've opted to inline the possibly most casual henka ever, courtesy of yumifuri Satonofuji:

So, what do you think the judges were writing after that bout: maybe "Satonofuji - hatakikomi - what a dick!" ?
